Here's where I stand:

Pedophilia is not the nationwide pandemic that the news media would have us believe.

A civilised society is judged by how it treats its lawbreakers, not the law-abiding. The infringing of one person's human rights (ie a 6 year-old child) does not excuse the negation of another person's human rights (ie 150lb rapist). This of course means that there may be difficult - even uncomfortable - decisions that have to be addressed, but it's the sign of a mature society that it has the courage to address these decisions in the first place. That is not to say that pedophiles be treated with kid gloves - they should be punished according to the full extent of the law, and if the punishments aren't deemed acceptable there are ways of getting that changed which does not involve taking the law into your own hands.

I don't agree with the 'string 'em up' kneejerk reaction that the tabloid media seems to encourage, nor do I agree with distasteful emotional displacement on the part of members of the public with no emotional investment in the case. I can well understand such anger from the victims and family members of abused kids - but it seems to me that wanting "5 minutes alone in a room with a kiddie-fiddler" will not solve the social problems that create these people (many pedophiles were themselves victims of abuse, or are otherwise mentally ill - you would have to be to want to do that to a child in the first place).

Not to mention that the suggestion that wanting

So it would seem. I believe we should treat these people according to the same principles of justice afforded everyone else. Again it's not about treating them with kid gloves, rather it is about preserving justice for all.

treat them??...either shoot them or put them back in prision....with the general population.

Why not just sterilise them and let them live their lives? Not physically, but make it a

condition of their release that they should take some sort of anti-Viagra every day for

the rest of their lives.

Do you good to do some reading ;)

Here's a start

# In 2004, U.S. residents age 12 or older experienced approximately 24 million crimes, according to findings from the National Crime Victimization Survey.

-- 77% (18.6 million) were property crimes

-- 21% (5.2 million) were crimes of violence

-- 1% were personal thefts.

# In 2004 for every 1,000 persons age 12 or older, there occurred

--1 rape or sexual assault

--2 assault with injury

--2 robberies

# Murders were the least frequent violent victimization -- about 6 murder victims per 100,000 persons in 2004.

Sex crimes are classified under violent crimes BTW.

I believe somewhere in this thread or some of those other old pedophilia threads there was something cited regarding that. They had done something like that but there was still high recidivism.

yes, i saw that all that. don't you think that is still too high a percentage? 1 out of 1,000?

also most child molesters served 3 years of a 7 year sentence and child molesters were more likely to be rearrested (3.3%) and of the 141 molested 79% were 13 or under. those child molesters with more than one previous arrest for such were more likely to be arrested again for such (7.3%) so what percentage of child molesters is there in the usa? that's what i've been trying to get outta you for a while. and is it higher in the usa than say britain? germany? also of note is within 3 years 38.6% of the sex crime offenders were returned to prison.

so what is the real answer for what to do with them? and don't you find that the above is just a bit high? perhaps you could make do with having one live by you, i'll pass on that. and i still say draw and quarter them, thus no chance then for further arrests. but i know, you being so enlightened and all you'll disagree ;)

Hopefully he'll have children one day and he'll see the light. It really worries me when someone is upset with how pedophiles are being treated.

And here we result to insults again - because ultimately its easier for you than to actually discuss the issue. "String em up" - thank you for making that one profound, world-altering point.

Screw you dickhead. I have never said or implied that I have sympathy for pedophiles. I simply believe you can't disregard the rule of law for one group of lawbreakers. Toughen up the sentences by all means. Why even have a justice system if you're going to disregard it for one specific subgroup of criminals for a crime that is in a statistical minority?

In any case, most justice systems make a distinction between "the mad" and "the bad" - with both groups being treated differently according to the circumstances of the case. The US, however, is the only country where an obviously mentally ill person can face the death penalty.

I simply disagree with the kneejerk sadism that this sort of case generates. You have no direct emotional investment in this case whatsoever - it has nothing to do with you and does not affect you - so why are you so angry about it?

Whatever is behind it, its certainly not conventional empathy. It is, I suspect, a form of crude emotional displacement - about making you feel better about yourself by living vicariously through the tragedies of others.

Ironically, those sort of views were not dissimilar to the sort of vitriol that was directed at the kid's parents after they were essentially found guilty by the public after a trial by media. That it now appears they didn't do it doesn't appear to enter into the equation, as you'd sooner turn around your anger and focus on someone else. Small comfort to the family really, who has after all, not only has lost a daughter but has had to defend themselves from baseless accusations.

... it has nothing to do with you and does not affect you - so why are you so angry about it?

Because people's emotions go beyond what affects them directly. When Israel attacks Lebanon, Muslims in far-away Germany get angry. When Hizballah kidnapped 2 Israeli soldiers, Jews in far-away Australia were mad as heck and made sure anyone reading their blogs knew it. When Jorge Bush talks about legitimizing illegal alien labor, US citizens who will never have to deal with the USCIS and are not part of the unskilled labor workforce go stark ravin' mad.

True. But sometimes, as in this case, a person's reaction says something very unpleasant about their psyche.
