Importing Car to US that's Financed

My fiance' really wants his car in the U.S. though. Now the work to find out if the bank will let him take it without paying it off all first. So many things to think about when bringing another person to live in a new country!

I am new to this forum and I have a question about bringing vehicle(s) into the US. Both of our vehicles are financed through Ford Motor Credit Canada (and I've seen the post on how to obtain the necessary documents from them for crossing border) however, I have not seen any mention of do they charge you anything when crossing the border (as far as taxes etc).

We are just wondering as we have 2 newer vehicles ( one is only 2 yrs old, the other 1 yr) and just don't want to have to pay thousands and thousands of dollars when attempting to bring them in. I am wondering if it would be better to just sell them or find someone to take over payments.

I do know the people at the Licensing Bureau where we own a home are less than honest, as I had enquired once about getting my vehicle plated there being I spend a lot of time at our home there, and he was willing to just do a VIN# check and as long as I got insurance there, they would give me plates for the vehicle.

But he did say there was 1 draw back, that once the paperwork went through their capitol in that state, if they investigated into where my paperwork was from crossing border with the vehicle, it would be subject to seizure. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

I was never asked at anytime during importation, licensing or when getting a state title if it was paid off. I never called GMAC to see if it was alright - payments were always made on time. I would say if your bank is ok with it then that's the only place where I would see that there may be a problem with it.

Which state did you register the car in?
