You never actually know till you go through it yourself. Being able to leave in a day or two doesn't do a person much good when they are literally saying "hours" left. Being able to see a loved one before they leave this world would be more important to me and I'd be on the first plane out and like you said, deal with the consequences later. On a happy note though, when we came back from ice fishing today I had an email from my friend that she's back in the US. I called to find out the details but there was no answer. I'm sure I will hear from her tomorrow.

Ah yes, but if she had known prior to the emergency call to return to her brother, that he was ill and that maybe, just maybe, she might have to leave on a moment's notice, she could have back then gone on that infopass appointment and procured the AP.

Yes yes a tragedy for sure, but she made a decision and it was the correct one, for her and her family.

Now she and her husband will make the next decision on which spousal visa to petition for and they will work through that also.

Did you ever hear from your friend about her CBP experience getting back in to the US?

Apparently her AP was approved while she was in Canada and mailed to her. Husband forwarded to her and she was able to get back in. I think he might have had someone intervene on their part. He's military and posted overseas. She said they didn't pull her in for questions or anything. She gave them the document and her passport, they asked why she left country, and she said her brother passed away, he gave his condolences and sent her through. Very lucky to say the least. This is what she tells me happened. I'm just glad she made it back.
