No, actually they haven't - not in first-person narratives. Furthermore, the difference is - she didn't survive, but through some miracle her writings (which were very well written) did. Meip gave them to Otto Frank as she didn't want anyone to read Anne's personal diary or writings. She figured they were personal and were for Anne's eyes only. Mr. Frank realizing what a valuable treasure (not monetary, but historically) was contained in those writings decided to put them out for people to read.

Moreover, any account from a survivor of the Holocaust is a treasure. The rarity of the people who survived and made a personal decision to tell their tale is one to be acknowledged. It took a lot of courage for survivors to discuss what happened as sometimes the horrors of their accounts were far too painful to retell.

One of my personal hobbies over the years is to study the Holocaust - firsthand accounts - especially written ones, was very difficult for quite some time.

First off Anne Frank was NOT a survivor. To hear her story and to know she suffered the fate of so many others like her is especially interesting.

Nobody knows for sure who gave up the location of the Frank's and the friends that lived there with them. They suspect it was a robber who heard noises coming from upstairs, who was caught stealing. In order to save himself from jail, he bargained their location.

Last time I was in Amsterdam, we visited the hideaway. It was very sad and very interesting to see the actual rooms mentioned in the book. It really helped put it into perspective for me. Otto Frank had all the furniture removed so you are just walking through empty rooms. There are pictures however. One of the most moving sights for me though, was the wall where Anne would paste up pictures of Hollywood stars to brighten up that space. Some of the pictures are still pasted there.

Blu - that is what I was trying to point out in my first paragraph: Furthermore, the difference is - she didn't survive, but through some miracle her writings (which were very well written) did. She was not a survivor, but a victim of the Final Solution.

Aside from that, I have always wanted to go to the hideaway. When I read her diary years ago, I almost felt like I was inside her room with her. She was so descriptive that you could practically smell what little food the family was cooking for dinner.

Ah..ok...my mistake. :). The book WAS very descriptive for me too. When I saw the attic area, with the large window to the outside (it is blocked off with glass so you can't go up there, but you can see it from where you are), it was exactly how I pictured it would be. The stairs all the way down to the front door is blocked off too so you can see them, but can't go down them. It is a steep and long staircase that I would LOATH having to go up and down. The whole area is larger than I imagined, but still way too small for that many people to live in for that long. My fiancee wasn't as impressed with the tour as I was, I think, but it really touched me to the point of tears when I saw her actual diary there. To me, it was totally worth going to.
