The American Medical Association today endorsed the Senate health care reform bill.

The organization's president-elect, Cecil Wilson, spoke at a press conference with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other Senate Democrats.

"After close and careful review, the AMA is pleased to announce its support for passage of the amended health system reform bill," Wilson said.

He said the AMA supports several "key benefits" in the bill, including "improvements in choice and access" and the elimination of denials for pre-existing conditions.

"America has the best health care in the world, if you can get it. But for far too many people, access to care is out of reach because they lack insurance," he said. "And this is just not acceptable to physicians."

He said the AMA has worked closely with senators over the past few weeks. And, because "there is still work to do," he said the organization will continue to work with the Senate to address issues of concern.

One of those issues is the matter of increasing Medicare payments to doctors, which he said Reid and Sen. Max Baucus promised to address early next year.

I bolded the reason why the AMA endorsed the bill. As Harry Reid said, it's all about what's in it for you.

the bill is great!!!! i'm saddened because 55 year olds can't buy into medicare. but, never mind that. if we are to believe the CBO, it reduces the deficit (debt? i forget... darn) which i'm sure, if it were any repub bill and the CBO said it was going to reduce the deficit, the repubs would be out on street corners with honk your horns for reducing the deficit signs. maybe even have a parade somewhere.

the only reason repubs don't want this to pass is so obama can't honk his horn around health care during the next election... that is sad.

there must be an angle they see that we don't yet.

You must have missed the doc fix. ;)

Since its enactment in 1997 the so-called "sustainable growth rate" mechanism, which uses a complex formula to establishes annual target costs for physicians' services under Medicare, has not kept up with actual costs.

That's required Congress to step in almost annually with one-year fixes to prevent doctors from facing ever-bigger potential cuts in payment rates. The cut that loomed for doctors in 2010 was 21 percent. Without a permanent redo of the payment formula, Congress would presumably have had to continue to do one-year fixes, something that would also have cost money and that doctors hated because of the uncertainty involved.

The "doc fix" has been a top priority for the American Medical Association, which cited its inclusion as a key reason for its endorsement of the House Democrats' sweeping health care bill.
