Microsoft is getting soft, could have told HP, Dell, Gates, Sony, Toshiba, Acer, and others to go to hell and manufactured their own computers, (in China) and set any pricetag they wanted on it.

As far as stand-alones going away, I think this is a little too broad. Stand alone digital cameras will be around for quite some time. The quality of I-phone cameras is no where near the power of stand-alone cameras. Until the limits of optics for the size of a good lens are circumvented, you will still see stand-alone cameras because some people want a really good camera and are willing to pay upwards to $1000 for it. Others just want an I-phone and don't want to pay $1000 extra for a camera they don't want that will make it much bigger.

The kindle, on the other hand, was outdated before it was ever released. It sounds like a cool idea, until you realize that anything with a screen and a little bit of memory aught to be able to do that with little effort.

I agree on the cameras.

As for the Kindle - it uses a different type of screen than any other conventional one.

The Kindle hardware device uses an E Ink brand electronic paper display, and is able to download content over Amazon Whispernet using the Sprint EVDO in the USA or, for newer Kindle 2 devices, AT&T's network internationally.[2] The Kindle hardware device can be used without a computer, and Whispernet is accessible without any fee.[3] These devices also provide free access to the internet. Kindle devices sold prior to October 19, 2009 were sold only in the United States.[4] On October 7, 2009, Amazon announced an international version of the Kindle 2 with a built-in 3G (HSDPA) and EDGE/GSM wireless modem for connectivity in over 100 countries, which went on sale October 19, 2009 worldwide.[5]

Other companies are also rushing to make their own readers - Sony has one on the market already.

If people look at these readers as an alternative to conventional reading material, I think they will be around for a long time. Adding extra functionality like MP3 player and cameras to cell phones has put any real dent in those markets. I don't see similar, multifunction handhelds doing any real damage to the readers.

I'd like to make a comment to SMR on cameras.

There is on-going research on liquid lens technology. Basically, the idea is that a drop of liquid with a very small diameter can be manipulated to receive light rays just as with a glass lens or plastic lens. The zoom is controlled by supplying the polar (one side is negative, one side is positive) liquid with an electric field (volt). Whatever value of this electric field is, it may cause the liquid to change shape, which in turn can increase the focus or decrease the focus of light.

Sony has just in the past year came up with a very energy efficient photon cmos detector. This is known is the EXMOS technology. It increases the bandwidth of the receiving photons, which would increase sensitivity to photons. In other words, using less energy it will be able to take photos in the dark without the need to add an external light source.

As CMOS photon detector increase in density, it is possible that the new Google phone that will cost 1000 dollars (can be used on any network) to take photos with the equivalent of a digital standalone quality of 10+ MP.

The Samsung phones for T-Mobile that has capacity of like 5 MP uses liquid lens. I think.

I feel like I have been run over by a steam roller when it comes to technology! Heck, it took me two days to figure out I needed to plug the USB cable into my new PS3 and my Sony flat screen
