Has anyone looked in to the options and cost of medical insurance in Colombia once you are married to a Colombian. The questions I have are do you have to be a resident? Can you have coverage even though you are living in the US. With the high cost of insurance here in the US it would be nice to have some options to travel to Colombia for an illness or elective surgery.

There are several health plans in Colombia available to anyone who's willing to pay for them. Many people have done as you said, keep paying a monthly fee for health insurance in Colombia just in case. It's much more affordable than paying for health insurance here. You still need to look into having some sort of coverage here in the US just in case of an accident or emergency health issues you may have.

I got my American wife a resident visa, ID and insurance here in Colombia. It's really easy and we pay $31 a month for the obligatory insurance plan (E.P.S) and that one even covers dental stuff.

I hired this company that handles these things for me. If you're in Bogota, PM me and I'll give you their info. They didn't charge me anything... I guess the insurance company pays them for getting people to sign up.
