translations notarized?

I've posed this question to a few people that have gone through the Ankara consulate, but hoping somewhere in the world someone is awake, and on this site, who might be able to answer my question

Do the English translations of the birth certificate and police record need to be stamped by a notary? My SO has taken the documents to a translation office, and they will sign and stamp it.. but they are asking if he wants to have them stamped by a Notary as well. This is an additional $60.. we'll pay it if it's needed.. but, I have searched the consulate information and it says they must be "certified" translations. I can't find anything that says they must be notarized as well.

If this is a professional translation office, with offices located throughout Turkey, wouldn't their signature and stamp be enough for certification?

Generally NO they do not need to be notarized but this could be consulate specific. If the consulate instructions do not satte that they need to be notarized, then no, they do not.

Thats a tricky question from what i've read.

The best answer is that, the translating party write something on the translated document, like:

I [ name ] , certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and [ ??? ]

languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the

document attached entitled .

Signature

Date Name

Thats it. Tecnicaly you dont even need a stamp. I would though to be on the safe side- i did with mine.

And as for a notary, i think thats a bit excessive, and doubt it will help, as the translator's stamp + statment should be more than adiquite.

Well, this one got a little tricky.. the translation office kept insisting that he would want the forms notarized. I talked to someone in the Turkish group who said they didn't need to be.. and I even got a response from the consulate that said they didn't need to be...

But the documents need to be taken to the "district" governors office for their stamp as well. My friend in the Turkish group knows of people who took them to get this stamp, without having them notarized, so he didn't pay the additional money for the notary.

Today, he took the documents to the district governors office.. but they wouldn't stamp them. Because... they weren't notarized.

Maybe each district office can decide if they want them notarized or not.. I don't know. But it sure is confusing. The consulate says one thing, some people do one thing.. and others have to do another.

Tomorrow, he's going to try to get the documents notarized, but if it works the way it does here they won't do it since the translation office already signed and stamped them.. and are not taking them there to sign and stamp in front of the Notary. According to the translation office, that's not necessary and he should have no problem with the notary.

We had ours notarized last year, but I believe there was something in the instructions that said it needed to be translated and notarized and also we needed a paper that said the translator (tercume) was certified to translate. Trying to get that last piece of info was like pulling teeth, but in the end they gave us a copy (I think they were afraid it would get out and circulated). I would just get it notarized as the Turkish bureaucratic process and the US visa process do not necessarily line up. Good luck!

The KEY is what the consulate requires, not what is required for translations within Turkey, for Turkish business. Alla does lots of translations, mostly for Moscow and Kiev. Ukraine requires that all translations for official use done in Ukraine be notarized. The consulate does not require this. Alla does her translations in the USA. If a Ukrainian fiancee has her translations done by a translator in Ukraine, she will tell you all day long they "had" to be notarized, and they DID in order for the Ukrainian translator to comply with Ukrainian law. But the consulate is not bound by that and the notary stamp means nothing to them and they don't care.

Moscow requires any document translated from a language other than Russian to be notarized. So if a Russian fiancee gets a police certificate from Ukraine, written in Ukrainian, and Alla translates it, she has to have it notarized, though to be honest we only recently learned this and it has not been a problem in the past. She does few documents in Ukrainian for Russian fiancees at any rate.

The consulates have people that speak both languages, of course, so they can verify it is a true and accurate translation. Consulates have wide latitude but if something requires a notary, the instructions specific to that consulate will say so.
