Need some suggestions

I have a job interview coming up next week with a high school for the office.

I have not worked in just a little over 3 1/2 years. First there was the "work authorization" situation and later on I had applied for jobs, had interviews with no luck and submitted applications but never heard from companies. I have not done any volunteer work in that time nor did any upgrading at the local College. I've basically been at home, getting acclimated to the area at first, then on to working inside the home (painting), yardwork outside the home as well as helping out the inlaw's. In other words I was a domestic goddess. My computer skills have not escaped me as I'm always on the computer and can type as fast as I did when I worked in Canada. Despite being out of a job for 3 1/2 years I'm sure my previous 20 years of office experience has not escaped me.

My question: How do I explain that 3 1/2 years since I last held a job? I can't use my son as an excuse as he's 15 years old, not a little kid.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Just be honest and tell them that you were adjusting to life here and had to go through the lengthy immigration process. I would say it quickly and then move on to your strengths. Keep talking about what you did in the past and how you have over 20 years experience. Control the conversation without letting them realize you are. And relax, it's at a high school, it's not like your life depends on this one job.

Good Luck!

Thanks. :)

Actually I'm hoping to land the job. I worked for a school board back in Canada at one time and really enjoyed my period of employment there. After having no other luck in jobs here, I'm actually at the point of "Please hire me" now.

I heard that employers mostly want to make sure that you were not in jail! Not sure if that's right or not, but if you explain about the long immigration processes, they would understand.

09-02-2005 Applications for AOS, EAD, and AP received by MSC

10-21-2005 AOS fingerprint notice for 12-08-2005

11-07-2005 AP approved

12-05-2005 Infopass appt at San Jose office for interim EAD -- Refused, because it is already approved by MSC on 11-07-2005

12-07-2005 Attempt at interim EAD at San Francisco office -- no go. Back to San Jose, where CSO (chief station officer) tells they will contact MSC via email to request permission to issue interim EAD

12-08-2005 Biometrics for AOS and EAD. Having no EAD appt letter was no problem (used EAD NOA)

12-15-2005 EAD arrived in the mail

12-24-2005 Received interview letter; interview scheduled 03-01-2006

01-28-2006 Received replacement SSN card in married name (5 wks since application)

03-01-2006 AOS interview -- approved; received stamp in the passport

03-13-2006 Green card arrived in the mail
