Driver dies in Lombard retention pond

October 19, 2009 (WLS) -- Police in Lombard are investigating what caused the driver of a car to end up in a retention pond.

Police were called around 8:15 p.m. Sunday near the parking lot of a restaurant at Myers and Butterfield roads. Someone from the restaurant jumped into the pond to try and get the driver out. But he was unable to get the door open before the car slid further under the water.

Fire department divers were called to search for the car.

"Obviously it is a mud bottom, mud and big boulders. They're trying to get to the bottom but they sink in the mud. The car was also in the mud. The difficulty is the car was hard to open," said Mike Torrence, Lombard Fire Department.

The driver of the car died in the accident. He was identified Monday as Ali Abbas, 29, of Oak Brook, Ill., according to the DuPage County Coroner's Office. The victim was pronounced dead at 9:42 p.m. at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Lombard police say Abbas' car struck two parked cars in the parking lot before going into the retention pond. No foul play is believed to be involved.

------------------------------------------------

Abbas's family are close family friends of ours, we hope that the autopsy results are completed soon so that the cause of his death can be determined.

I am posting this here just to ask for your prayers if you do pray.

Thank you.

Wow. My prayers are with them. I'm thinking stuck throttle on the car. It took off, hit the cars and the collision knocked her out. I lost my Mom to a drowning after a crash. The circumstances are different, but there are some similarities. It'll be 12 years next week and we still don't really know what happened.

Police seek answers in area woman's death

Police are "at a standstill" in determining what caused a South Charleston woman to crash her minivan into the Kanawha River, an officer said.

Patricia Diane Boylen, 48, died at Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston on Wednesday, about two hours after the 5:45 a.m. accident.

Boylen, the cafeteria manager at St. Albans High School, was driving westbound on MacCorkle Avenue between South Charleston and St. Albans when her vehicle left the road. It went down a rocky embankment and ended up in the Kanawha River, about 30 feet from the bank.

"We just haven't been able to determine what caused her to leave the road," said South Charleston Police Sgt. D.B. Cunningham.

A witness, Danny Daniels of St. Albans, saw Boylen run off the road and talked to her briefly through her open window after her minivan plunged into the river. But when he returned to the river after trying to seek help, Boylen had rolled up her window and her vehicle was almost completely submerged.

Divers broke into the van and pulled Boylen out at about 6:45 a.m. She was taken to Thomas Hospital, where she died a short time later.

Boylen's body has been taken to the state medical examiner's office in South Charleston for an autopsy.

Police said there were no passengers in the vehicle, which apparently had no mechanical problems.

Boylen's co-workers were saddened by the news of her death.

Kanawha County Schools spokesman Randy Schillingburg said meals at St. Albans "were outstanding because of her hard work and dedication to the job." St. Albans Principal Butch Anderson said students "loved Diane. Diane was the kind of person who made sure we had the best food in the county. She loved those kids. She mothered them." Anderson told of one St. Albans student who took some classes at South Charleston High and couldn't eat lunch there. Boylen saved him food every day so he could eat when he returned to St. Albans, Anderson said.

"Just yesterday, Diane was bubbling about having a grandchild She had already named the grandchild after someone she liked." Boylen's daughter is seven months pregnant. "She was living for her grandchild," the principal said.

Anderson said he brought a counselor into the cafeteria on Wednesday to talk with Boylen's co-workers.

Wow. That's tragic.

I know where that is - it's where the Lombard fountain is, near Yorktown Shopping Center. We drive by there all the time :(.

My condolences to the family (F)

Yes, that is where it is, and we too live in the vicinity. Driving by it now will be a different feeling...

Thank you for your thoughts

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. (F)

I appreciate your kind words, thank you.

He has left behind a pregnant wife (5 months pregnant), and to know that he waited 2 years for her immigration process (from India in her case) so that she could join him in the USA...it has been 6 months since her POE here...may she find peace in this difficult time.
