I don't believe I've mentioned the length of your replies, other than to (in the past) mock you for posting single jpeg responses as if they were the height of wittiness. So I'm not sure I understand where this comes from. You are, however, doing a fantastic job of making my point for me. A qualified moderator would know when and/or how to diffuse the situation, not revel in it.

To anybody else who cares:

It's pretty well documented that I personally dislike Charles. In fact, to avoid getting myself banned for shooting fish in barrels with rocket launchers, I interact with Charles as little as possible. So yes, it's true, were Charles to disappear from the face of VJ forever, I'd probably do one of those Mary Tyler Moore tossing my hat in the air things and then have myself a nice refreshing beverage while humming a Carpenters tune.

Having said that, it doesn't take away from my basic argument: has Charles shown an ability to act in the capacity of a moderator? Has he demonstrated his ability to be impartial or dispassionate? Has he demonstrated a talent for diffusing a situation rather than inflame it? Has he displayed the ability to write a well thought-out argument to either support or defend a position? Has he demonstrated the basic maturity you'd expect from somebody who acts in the capacity of moderating a discussion?

I believe the answers to these questions are all no, and I would say that even if this were some Bizarro-world alternate universe where I liked Charles and gravy did not in fact make everything taste better. If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong. But I'm not.

Add to that rumor the well known fact that many people don't like Charles, and what do you have?

The obvious conclusion that Charles will do right by the responsibility he's been given, because it's a responsibility he's wanted and because he knows that any screw-up on his part will mean proving his detractors right.

So I think y'all can relax. Charles will do just fine. He has no choice.

There are no real requirements to be a mod. You have not be retarded and be online a lot. The bar is pretty low.

The point about guns is they are designed to kill and to kill from a measured distance from the target so that the shooter can remain safe and sound. They are great weapons, that's why all armed forces use them, rather than plastic bags, sedans or bricks.

A gun can kill hundreds of people within an hour. No one is going to get a car and repeatedly run over hundreds of people. Let alone kill hundreds of people with a brick.

That line of reasoning from some is just so third worldish. A gun has one purpose and one purpose alone, to kill. It can do so in a short amount of time and most people, include a navy seal like Charles, have little to do to stop a bullet heading towards them. Hence why they are controlled in every other developed country. Excluding the third world of course, which some clearly have no issue being classed with.

The other thing people do not account for is that they think they have a chance to defend themselves if they are armed. Okay fine. So what if a group of people holding guns approaches a person or breaks into a house. Or is this John Wayne gun owner Singlehandedly going to take them all down?

Accurate - he is talking about the purpose in terms of design. The design of a gun is not to act as a deterent by looking menacing. The design of a gun is to kill, period and another of your specious arguments to try to pretend that guns are something that they are not. It's sort of funny, but mostly it's pathetic because as Pooky and others have pointed out, it's this very line of thinking, that citizens should do the job more properly reserved for trained professionals, that has had a hand in creating this very violent culture that exists in pockets of America. Would that the rest of it remains outside this frontiersman thinking.

Sounds to me like a good argument for disallowing Charles to moderate MC, more than an argument for him to not be mod at all. Other similar restrictions do exist.
