A 37-year-old mother of three is on life-support after going to a Weston, Fla. beauty clinic for a routine liposuction procedure, the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reports on its Web site.

The attorney for the physician who performed the procedure at Weston Medspa said Rohie Kah-Orukotan, a nurse, did not suffer complications until the end of the procedure.

"She went in for a routine liposuction2.gif ... performed by (Dr. Omar J. Brito Marin) without any complications until the very end, at which time Dr. Brito immediately administered emergency care and called 911," attorney Brian Bieber told the Sun-Sentinel. "Paramedics arrived; they noted all emergency procedures put into place were proper."

State officials told the newspaper that the privately owned clinic is not licensed to perform liposuctions under general anesthesia2.gif. It could perform a scaled down version of a liposuction procedure while a patient is awake, however. Bieber said he didn't know which type of procedure Brito performed. State records show Brito is not a board certified plastic surgeon and has a background in occupational medicine.

Kah-Orukotan remained unconscious, with no brain activity, Wednesday at a Florida branch of the Cleveland Clinic, where her family is agonizing over whether to keep her on life support, the family's attorney said. It's been five days since Kah-Orukotan had the procedure.

Pays to know who your Dr really is, and what they are capable of doing - even then things go wrong. Surgery is not foolproof, no matter how routine.

"Dr. Omar J. Brito Marin"

As I'm openly anti-Arab/Muslim, I would never trust a doctor called "Omar".

All arabs/muslims?

My dentist is originally from Iran and he is absolutely brilliant - I have no idea what he thinks about ideologically.

Well... never say never, obviously. Let's just say, I would double- and triple-check his credentials,

just to be sure.

Edited: Probably wouldn't do it for a dentist, but for any surgery I'd want to make sure the guy

is qualified and his patients are happy.

Of course, especially in that situation :P

I can't say I get it though, really, this idea that somehow just because someone is arab/muslim they necessarily think/act in a certain way - or perhaps that is not what you are getting at?

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Well, no, but I'm going to be suspicious until convinced otherwise

I think I would be wary of anyone holding fundamental beliefs of a religious nature that are at odds with scientific knowledge, but that supposes someone like that one would become a Dr and that I would know they held said beliefs, mostly, I can't see how one could possibly know.

Right. I'd be wary of any religious doctor - Muslim or Christian or whatever space god they happen to believe in.

The top surgeon at our local hospital is Muslim and he also is an obgyn, and he did my c-section. He said a prayer in the outer area before performing the c-section, my husband saw him. I don't share his beliefs but first of all, from meeting him at the obgyn office, he was one of the friendliest Dr's I have ever met. And his skill level is superb. And I appreciated the fact he prayed, whatever the reason whether it is a requirement in Islam before touching blood and such or he just wanted to. It's wrong to be biased about faith and a trained Dr, well most people that I know already know that.

You can live in your little bubble then. I thought I was supposed to be in the bubble, being a Christian and all! :o

Yeah, you're on your own - with prayers before touching blood and all that.
