Kimberly "Kimi" Young, 22, died Tuesday night Sept. 22, 2009 at University Hospital.

OXFORD — Friends say the Miami University graduate who died this week after reportedly suffering from swine flu delayed getting medical treatment because she did not have health insurance.

News of Kimberly Young’s death Wednesday, Sept. 23, came as a shock to those who knew the vibrant 22-year-old who was working at least two jobs in Oxford after graduating with a double major in December 2008.

Young became ill about two weeks ago, but didn’t seek care initially because she didn’t have health insurance and was worried about the cost, according to Brent Mowery, her friend and former roommate.

Mowery said Young eventually went to an urgent care facility in Hamilton where she was given pain medication and then sent home.

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, Young’s condition suddenly worsened and her roommate drove her to McCullough Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, where she was flown in critical condition to University Hospital in Cincinnati.

“That’s the most tragic part about it. If she had insurance, she would have gone to the doctor,” Mowery said.

Oh lords....here we go again with the Canada bashing comments.

Y'know, unless you've actually LIVED there how can you possibly know every little thing there is to know? All YOU know is what you've read and as you know, it is possible that the articles you've read have been...shall we say...exaggerated?

I'm not disagreeing with you on the healthcare issue...it's the LACK of sympathy...empathy...whatever you want to call it. It's the judgmental attitude for this poor girl that bothers me so freakin much. And since you say you would use the ER because "you're one of the others who will foot the bill" I hope you're not one of those that complains about "the others" who use the ER knowing they can't pay for it. However, since you insist this IS about healthcare: It DOES make a difference about whether or not she had a job...some on this thread have made scathing remarks about her job situation...which they know nothing about. Without a decent job WITH benefits this is probably WHY she didn't go anhywhere to seek medical attention. Don't you realise that not all jobs offer healthcare, especially if it's a small business? Most part timers don't get benefits...ask my husband...ask any number of others who are unfortunately PT. That's what the job issue has to do with the healthcare issue.

Sigh.

I didn't know the girl, she died. Lots of girls died today for various reasons that I don;t know and I will spare you false feelings gushing from my keyboard. The topic is healthcare, the topic says she died "because" she didn't have healthcare. This is horse squeeze. She HAD healthcare, we all do. She went to an urgent care clinic instead of a hospital, probably saw a PA instaed of a doctor but got treated in 30 minutes instead of 3 hours. I do not know why she made all her decisions, why she worked where she worked and frankly I do not care. This topic is about health care, not sympathy, humantiy, empathy whatever and it is a pretty cheap and whiny position to run and hide under "sympathy" when logic does not work for your argument.

I wish NO jobs offered health care. It is a flawed concept. Let us keep the money and buy our own just as we buy insurance for our homes and cars and stop this nonsense. The best person to care for your family is YOU

Then your complaint is? :) You should know better than anyone that it isn't FREE in Canada...that's a misnomer. :)

Did you miss my point? Yes. Canada has government health care, we hear it all the time from the Canadians and yet they run from their own system every chance they get and avoid paying for it every chance they get and it is held out to be one of the GOOD systems (certainly much better than Ukraine, I will give you that much)

My COMPLAINT is the governemnt here is trying the same thing and this post blamse the death of a woman on not having such here. If anyone is guilty of not having sympathy it is anyone that would exploit this girls death for their own political cause. THAT is shameful

Exactly, there is no such thing as free health care. If I am going to pay for it (and I am) then I prefer to make my own choices for my family and the government can just as well keep their nose out of my business.

Why are there so many Canadian lisence plates in the healthcare clinics in Northern Vermont and New York, especially the outpatient surgery and diagnostic clinics? Go to Vermont Radiology, the waiting room is full of Quebecois and 2-3 Vermonters. What gives? Why so many Quebec license plates in our hospital parking lots? I mean it would never enter MY head to LEAVE MY OWN COUNTRY for health care, why are so many Canadians and Mexicans coming here?

What the HECK are we doing with a huge modern hosptial, Northwestern Medical Center, in St. Albans Vermont???? There isn't enough people in Franklin county to support a SMALL hospital...but it is just a few miles from the Quebec border. Hmmm???? Could it be? You mean someone did a pro-forma for a big hosptial in a county with a population of about 8,000 and it looked viable? Maybe because it borders a Province with 7 million people with FREE healthcare! That wouldn't seem to be a good business decision, would it? I mean who would expect the people with FREE healthcare IN ANOTHER COUNTRY to fill up your hospital when the indigenous population could never support it. Yet the place is always busy. And just across the lake in equally sparsely populated Clinton County NY is ANOTHER huge hospital. Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH) The medical industry is one of Vermont's biggest employers (2nd only to education) and there is only a little over 500,000 people in the state! By far the biggest concentration of medical facilities is the little populated NORTH end of the state. The entire state doesn't constitute a middle sized city in population yet abounds with seemingly endless jobs (there is no shortgage of medical related jobs here) in the medical industry and stiff compeition for nurses and such, to serve Canadians who have FREE healthcare in their home country. :wow:

Go figure! :bonk:

Next question...why so many Quebec license plates in our shopping malls? Could it be the 15% tax we DON'T have on food, shoes and clothes in Vermont? D'ya think? Canaidans flee their country every day to avoid their healthcare system AND the taxes that pay for it. Where will WE go if we have government health care? Better yet, where will the Canadians go and how will Canada pay for the increased burden when they can no longer escape and HAV to use the Canadian system?

"Canaidans (sic) fleeing their country."

You have no idea how silly you sound to informed Canadians.

What "increased burden"? Out-of-country expenses are already covered under Provincial healthcare. It is more economical to do so than to build entire facilities in certain areas.

Cross-border shopping and healthcare goes both ways, Gary. Only you don't hear a bunch of Canadians screaming "It's a conspiracy!" when they see American plates on the Canadian side of the border. There are reciprocal agreements between US and Canadian healthcare facilities all along the northern border. Just ask the Americans in Michigan who have their babies in Ontario. I suggest you become better informed.

How is that possible? It comes directly out of our taxes. How long did you "live" there, Gary? You don't appear to be very well educated on the health system.

no one I knew went to the US for medical stuff..

I am not saying that some people don't but you make it sound like all Canadians go running to the US for health care..

and this means what? You don't know many people?

I make it sound exactly as it is. There are two large hospitals operating full blast in sparsely populated counties of nothern Vermont and New York serving the needs (mostly) of Canadians needing healthCARE. Canadians HAVE health insurance, what they need is healthCARE. many of them get it by driving a short distance from Canada's second largest city and using the facilities in the USA. It is a fact. I gave the names of the hospitals, you can look them up on the internet, google them and check out the location. Check their location relative to Montreal vs. any large population in the USA.

Come to the University mall in Burlington and count lisence plates. Go to the town center in downtown Burlington, you speak French I hope? I do, but them I lived in Quebec so why not? Comes in handy in Burlington VT shops and doctors waiting rooms. Check our newspapers. What the HECK is a city of 50,000 people doing with so many medical jobs available????? The fact IS ENOUGH Canadians, not all of course and I never said that, DO leave the country to act as a safety valve for the Canadian system And provide a thriving medical industry here where there is no business having one. I collect the collateral benefits in options available to me, much more so than in any other isolated city of 50,000 in the USA. One presumes they will no longer have this option when we have government health care (I do not have the option to go to Canada) then what? What happens to MY access to healthCARE. Will I have to go to Boston for an MRI? The FOUR MRI clinics in Burlington will not survive with the population in Vermont. What wil happen with Quebecs health care (already the worst in Canada's Provincial administered healh system) when they receive 10-15% or more, patients?

Canadians have been operating in blissful ignorance if they are not aware that their entire system will collapse when they lose the US safety valve they currently enjoy.

Once, I was at the medical clinic here in HI and my mustang was parked out front with the AB plates on it. I was clearly fleeing from medical care in AB. Oddly, there were no other CDN license plates out front. I guess they found cheaper care in the lower 48.

.....and here I am WANTING to emigrate to Canada!!!!

So Gary, I am assuming that you have some cold hard facts to back up what you're telling all of us about how Canada is going to collapse? Would you care to share that with all of the delusional Canadians...and Canadian wannabes?
