Maybe I should make this two separate posts, but anyway . . .

So now we have our interview date (finally!!!) who do we need to notify of our move other than the usual utilities, banks and so on. Does anyone have a handy list already or is there a thread that discusses this already?

Second: I'm trying to wrap my head around the car import thing. Our car was originally bought in the US, so no problems there and I get the customs bit no problem. What I'm trying to figure out is the logistics of insurance, driver's licenses and registration. The car & my wife are in Ontario right now; I'm in NY, but still have my Ontario driver's license (long story - has to do with insurance) and she'll need her social security card before she can actually get a driver's license herself.

Any ideas on how to do this without us driving around uninsured for days/weeks? I did check with my (house) insurance company and they can only cover NY registered cars.

Third: Because we're both right on the border my wife will be making several trips back & forth in the car before moving altogether. We were told by the customs folks at the POE that we only need to have a list of items actually with us for import purposes, but I'm wondering about items that normally live in the car, like CDs and stuff. Do we need to clean out the car, or is there paperwork that you get to hang onto to prove you already imported that stuff? Minor question, I know, but I don't want any avoidable hassle.

Hi,

There are quite a few threads discussing who to notify - but no list I have ever seen.

Basically notify everyone you would notify if you were moving across the street.

As for the insurance, not sure.

For importing, to avoid a hassle, each time you cross the border with stuff bring a list of everything, which of course you will be - but also bring a copy of everything you have already imported - just in case you get asked about things you might have with you in the car, as you mentioned.

Geico insures Canadian registered/plated vehicles with Canadian driver's licenses. I just had to give them the updated information once I'd changed everything over.

Don't worry about the items which are normally in a vehicle. They really don't care.

As for the list..... Kathryn41 had a pretty comprehensive list posted somewhere. I'll see if I can find it.

Thanks Krikit.

We were getting ourselves tied in knots over the can't register without insurance which we can't get without the NY driver's licenses which we can't get without losing our Ontario insurance . . . Enough to make your head spin!

We'll look into Geico insurance as a temporary option (I have my own favorite insurance co., but they won't cover the car in this situation).
