THe marriage certificate and license have your maiden name because most states do not add your married name to their records...They show who married who not who married who and changed their name, some women do not change their name or add hyphens etc. This can be done at the dmv and with SSA once you get the EAD or GC...

Just send in the AOS papers in your married name and go about changing the other things after that. This way your GC and other documents from DHS will reflect your married name.

From what I have read its next to impossible to get a drivers license or state id before you get EAD or GC to reflect your married name and be valid past the date on your I-94 but this may not be the case with ALL states just MOST of them (incl my state of Indiana), they say you are out of status at I-94 expiration so they make the dl and id expire then also.

You don't need to wait for the SSA to update to your married name that is why you send certified copy of marriage record to DHS when you file AOS.

Here is link to view a picture of a visa to tell you what # is what A# and Visa Immigrant # etc

My A number was on My visa...

It began with A.....;)

Name change stuff....well....

I already have a bank account in my new name (I just took my marriage certificate with me), am on the lease in my new name, have filed for my GC in my new name and will be doing a name change on the SSN I have just received.

My marriage certificate does not show my married name anywhere, but people are smart enough to assume that I am changing my surname to match the name my husband carry's. TBH so far had no problems with the name change situation. I just started using it when I applied for things.

The A # &/or Alien Registration Number is the same thing. This is given to you by INS. If you do not have one leave it blank on the application. This will not be found on the Visa. Edited by Bebeos
