Among the activities the government initially suggested for prekindergarten to sixth-grade students: that they " write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president."

As a former classroom teacher, this sounds like a standard lesson plans suggestion, take it or leave it. Any teacher worth her salt is going to take this opportunity to make a discussion or activity around it, otherwise what's the point if you just have kids watch the tv, shut it off, and open up their workbooks.

This kind of activity in elementary school would most likely garner responses like:

"I'm going to help the president by staying in school."

"I want to graduate school and go to a good college because..."

"I'm going to help the president by getting good grades because...."

Honestly, what is wrong with that? Don't we want students to get good grades and graduate?

Lets not pretend the schoolhouse is the place for a battle of view points.

Sorry if i'm misreading your post...

But isn't the schoolhouse a place for kids to confront different viewpoints? Not elementary kids so much, but older kids? The world isn't made of monolithic opintions....

Isn't the schoolhouse where we teach them to debate, the skills from which are the same used to learn to write persuasive essays, analysis, and using evidence to prove points? These are skills for success and credibility in their futures....

All Obama has to do is to quit sending our money to Iraq and Afghanistan and return it back to the states. Cost of tuition has skyrocketed since 9/11, what our kids don't need is more BS, they need money. It takes money to do to school.

Amen, to that.

But imagine the fall-out to: "We're bailing out of these two wars and spending the money to invest in Education."

Anyone who has an issue with this has to be the dumbest person to roam the freagin planet. I heard some folks at work complaining and waiting to take their kids out. So I couldn't resist and said you seriously have to be on the verge of mental retardation to have an issue with this. Straight into the mangers office it was for me.

Not only does this disrespect the president but more importantly, what does it teach kids? That you just ignore anyone with opposing views. That Russian guy who predicted the breakup of the US doesn't seem that crazy after all.

UNless Obamer delves into his political agenda I can't see what the fuss is about either however....

Lets not pretend the schoolhouse is the place for a battle of view points.

The deck is too often stacked one way and kids are not equipped to respond .... and it's not like a 2 vigorous

view points are going to be offered anyway.

As for the Russian guy's prediction, his ending might be right but he couldn;t be more wrong on the reasons.

Danno for someone to have turned this into a Obama is trying to brainwash the kids, is a real cunning move. It's bloody ridiculous actually.

As to the Russian's prediction, I seriously see this country heading to a civil war 2.0. The divide between the two ideologies is huge. This is not some fringe group either. All it take is for something to happen and the situation could very easily hit the fan. Now if you had told me the same thing about the US three years ago, I would have thought good one mate. It clear that there are people who would want to secede. When your own presesident cannot get 3 miniutes of respect and attention, sorry the country is doomed. What that attitude tells me is that these people have no faith in their fellow patriots, in the people who voted for the president. I hate to say this but it's we the people that make up a country, so if you hate them, you hate the country.

How do you think the Greeks, the first democracy, failed? It certainly wasn't because the clown azz Romans conquered them. It was because they had so much rivalry, spite and hatred towards the other side, that they eventually sabotaged each other. That would rather destroy the country than have the other side rule (win). A loss they never recovered from.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Personally I think this is just one more media story overblowing a vocal minority. Most people know this is no big deal.

The republicans lost the election and are feeling powerless and using any means at their disposal to remain relevant. Good for them. I think they are doing a great job staying in the spotlight. This election could have really sank them completely. They have been fighting tooth and nail to keep some sort a position in Washington. While their scare and intimidation tactics may piss off the other side (me included), it is working on some of the Independants and more moderate Republicans. Guess we will have to wait and see if it can carry them to a regain of seats in the midterm elections.

It's more than that. I have a few friends who are teachers here, that recently tweeted about droves of parents calling up and demanding their child not be shown this.

I've got no problem that message. Most liberals have hated the "pull yourself up" line for years as ####### as they know minority kids can't succeed because racism and economic inequalities will doom kids' chances.

Well actually I recently read an international study which illustrated just that. Kids that are in poor demographics have a much harder chance of succeeding.

Funny thing is that I thought repubs hate government. So why not home-school or put your kids into private schools?

Most people can't afford that option and pay for public education. It's funny when people who've never attended public school in the U.S. claim to know-it-all.

ah but these same people love to b-tch and whine about the government.

I don't know what it's going to take but republicans need to get over Rush and get some international experience. Go live overseas and experience life in other developed country. And I am not talking about be stationed at some military base, an example that everyone repub with international experience seems to have. Sorry but all of the military bases are surrounded in shitty areas, therefore, they are hardly an example of quality of life.

You're a school teacher and you still miss this fundamental flaw in Obamas request>?

IN THIS COUNTRY WE DON"T DO THINGS FOR THE PRESIDENT.

We do them for the Country.

We stopped serving the CROWN a long time ago.

If you go in for this CULT OF PERSONALITY, read up on countries who practice such tactics in school rooms.

I'm wondering if ..... in this big democratic mood the principle so endearing to .... if anyone else will get the chance to address the student body in the same manor ....to express a perhaps counter opinion..... or is this a the typical Lib "comfort zone"? (only they get the mic)

This would actually be quite funny. Get a conservative up there to say "Kids, don't stay in school. Screw college. Don't get a job. Have you considered drugs? They're a fairly fun and productive recreational activity...."

Real love stories never have endings...

Did you miss the part where this message is for ALL students so your point is as logical as suggesting wood shop is okay for all grades because high schoolers can handle it.

Why don't you people just admit Team Obama fumbled here a little.

The only fundamental flaw I see here is in brain power or lack of.

Yeah, instead you are a lap dog, a pawn, of the rich and corporations. Yeah what an upgrade    Please never use this argument in any other developed country as your ignorance will be laughed at.

I said it months ago when I couldn't find a single liberal here who noticed any political teachers the entire time they were in school. Why? Because it doesn't seem notable when the teacher is pushing views you agree with.

If you don't like the health care here, your free to use your own home remedies, Booyah.

I had a teacher at college that pushed his conservative Republican religious agenda. It was in a class that was suppose to study the bible as a literary work, not as a religious guide. He didn't seem to understand that though.

had an algebra teacher who pushed an agenda in high school. (lived in southern new england at the time).

anyway ... his agenda was the NY Yankees (they were his team). His students quickly polarized into two groups .. those who liked the yankees ... and those who liked any other team that played against the yankees (many were bosox fans)

to this day 30+ yrs later ... I still hate the yankees and cheer for any team that plays against the yankees.

(and yes ... I passed his class with good grades).

This would be tantamount to; saving money by one means and then throwing that money into another sink-hole.

HInt: there is no connection between gov't spending money on education... and any sizable improvement being the result.

If you want real improvment in children's education, let the people who love the the most get back in charge.

GIVE PARENTS VOUCHERS.

Parents should be allowed to choose, I totally agree. However, on a county level, this is not feasible. If the schools were administered by the state, yes they could easily afford to do this.

You do realize thought that you would still need to pay out of your pocket too.
