Hi everyone!

Thanks for all your support. Just four months after sending in the application, I received my green card in the mail. Our interview went well - lots of questions, but we answered them just fine and the officer said at the interview that we would be approved and we were relieved and very excited!

I received my permanent residency card, but that means that I am a conditional permanent resident, right? In less than two years, we have to apply for removal of conditions, because we have been married for less than two years.

So, my question is... when can I apply for citizenship? On the USCIS website, it says that if you have been married to a U.S. citizen for three years, you can apply for citizenship. Or is it three years after you have your ten year green card?

How long does the application for citizenship take? The reason I am so curious is because I want to go into law enforcement, which I have wanted to do all my life (and have lived in the US for the past 15 years), but can't do until I'm a citizen.

Any ideas?

Thanks for all your help and encouragement throughout our journey.

You can apply for USC 90 days before 3 years of the GC issuence date you have now. That is if you are still married at that time. If not you'll have to wait 5 years.:blink:

Right.

You are eligible to to apply for citizenship 3 years after the original date on your GC if you are married to a USC. You can send in your application up to 90 days before that.

Thank you for all the answers. That's great. It looks like it could take up to two years for the application for citizenship to be approved. Has anyone had a different experience or are they trying to speed up the processing time?

Thanks again!

Elsie,

if you go over to the Naturalization sub-forum, you'll see that the tendency has been to get the Naturalization done from start to finish in 2-6 months.

Don't forget to remove conditions before applying for naturalization!
