i have filed the n600 for my foreign-born wife's son who i have adopted. i received a letter from the field office requesting his presence along with various original documents (adoptions papers, marriage cert, birth certs, etc). my question is will he get the certificate of citizenship at that time, or will they take the documents, send us on our way, and later get the certificate? also, is there any type of ceremony with the n600? thanks

Good question as I'm filing for my adopted daughter also. I "imagine" we'll have to wait until the print up the Cert of Citizenshp.

I really don't understand why we have to have a interview as I already have proof of USC with her passport.

Pain in the butte as we have to fly to Honolulu and the trip cost 500+ for the three of us.

Sorry I can't answer your question about having a ceremony. I'm going to call our local office and see what they say.

When I was at my citizenship oath ceremony, the Director of Atlanta USCIS explained that for N600 applicants, children under the age of 13 would receive their certificate in the mail, but children 14 to 18 would be required to swear an oath in the presence of a USCIS official. I would assume they either get their certificate when they swear the oath however, it may be possible that it will be mailed to them later. I didn't get the impression that 14 and up attend a regular oath ceremony though, rather take the oath at the USCIS offices.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Thanks rebelheart and kathryn41.

Hopefully we won't have to have a interview or take the oath. My daughter is 11 and I can't see her standing up and taking an oath. Don't know if an oath is even valid for 11 year old.

thanks for the responses. my adopted stepson is 14 so it looks like he will be taking an oath. i just wish i knew if it was on that day or a future day. if we are just dropping off papers and him being interviewed, there is no reason for my wife to take off work. but if he takes an oath and is presented with the certificate, she of course would like to be there.

also, one of the things they requested we bring with us is proof of residence, but they did not say if it is for him or for me. i will probably bring both. any suggestions as to types of documents? thanks again.
