Hmmm...

Simple chemistry is possible though. Enough even for some 'advanced' lessons at the high school level. But like Len said- this requires a good deal of preparation.

More prep than mixing bleach with household cleaning products to make poison gas?

You mean mixing sodium hypochlorite with ammonia to produce chroline gas, 500 ppm will kill you, painfully. I taught for a few years, under the impression that if person can't explain anything, they really don't understand it themselves.

Had very selfish motives in both teaching my kids and making darn sure they were on the high honor roll, I didn't want to support them the rest of my life, four of my kids are far richer than I am, but not having as many kids to drain them dry. Also spend a lot of time with my wife helping her to become a medical interpreter, more than doubled her paycheck, so I can take it easy, screwing around on this board. But time to get started, have work to do.

There should be no stigma to failure. Failure just means you have to study harder and try again!

and if they fail again, there is always welfare.

Teaching is one of the best learning tools there is.

I've never met anyone who was home schooled for most of their life that wasn't weird and had no social skills.

So they were weird but had social skills?

I had to answer my own question on why I might not have met homeschoolers when I was growing up- it was illegal.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, the practice was largely illegal across the US. "The mechanism that was causing home-schooling to be illegal was teacher certification," says Ian Slatter, director of media relations for the HSLDA. In 1983 two evangelical attorneys, Michael Farris and Mike Smith, founded the organisation to defend the rights of home-school parents. They fought to remove requirements that parents be certified to teach their own children. Through an impressive run of legal battles and political lobbying, they managed to make home-schooling legal in all 50 states within 10 years.
