Well the OP didn't give any details on the contract's content. But I thought it was very important to remind people that it can be very common to make a prenuptial concract in another country, and that it shouldn't be taken as an offense.

I only know how it's like in France, but here, the regime you'll pick is part of the mariage!

Here, it actually would be supicious if your future spouse would refuse it. ^^

Things can "look" so different depending on your culture. For me, a prenup contract is the "regular path".

Having recourses is one thing, it's very different than preventing. Once the damages are done, sometimes there's not much you can do to fix it.

Oh, just for the "little story", in french, mariage is spelled with only one R, because you only marry once. :P

"Single R in marriage" idea is cute, but the official divorce rate in France is 38.3%. Pre-nup is used in France as well, like everywhere else.

Apparently, some state legislator got hit by a gold digger, in a divorce court, the 50-50 split, if it even goes to court, is only the wealth and goods acquired after the marriage, what a person brings into the marriage is not considered in that split. Really no need to go to court if a couple can settle on their split, sign the forms and present it to a judge, but if one party claims more becomes the plaintiff, the court will take a closer look at that person and examine the fairness of their request. My ex made requests, demands was more like it for goods I had before our marriage, judge said, no to her.

Major wealth does not exist in my family, but if it's family wealth, that should be assigned before the marriage as that wealth belongs to those particular relatives, a trust fund is the most common way for minors.

One country, 50 states, 50 different sets of laws to live by, if you live in a state where you are not protected by a gold digger, perhaps a pre-nuptial is the only way to go. But if you have to do that, really not entering a marriage with trust of your partner. If part of the marriage ceremony vows said, do you solemnly swear that if your spouse gambles away all the money you earned to take car of your kids was gambled away by your spouse, or used to entertain persons that are friends of your spouse, you will give your spouse half of that last can of beans that is all that is left. If they said that and other little known laws of the divorce courts, would make one really think twice before saying, I do.

Nick, you bring out an important fact in all this pre-nup debate: The Pre-nup just shows what each person had prior to entering the marriage. Nothing wrong with that!
