My sister and fiance and I are in an argument about this particular issue. Going through legal immigration ourselves, I understand why many people come here illegally. From the time away from loved ones, to the shear costs of some visas, I get why many people come here from poorer counties looking for better opportunities and to support their families back home. I get it.

I don't hate all the people coming here just based on that fact. I am more angry with our government for not coming up with better options. I don't like the fact that here in California, most job offers come with the caveat, "must speak spanish." I don't like that just about everywhere you look everything is in spanish and english. I don't like that my son was failing 3rd grade so many years ago, because they ONLY taught his class in spanish because HE, a BORN American was only one of three kids in his class that SPOKE english. There are MANY things wrong with the system of immigration here. However, to generalize millions of people as slackers, lazy or people who take advantage of all the freebies America hands out and none of them even appreciate it...well, lets just say it has lead to some very heated arguments between my sister and me...AND my fiancee who supports her prejudice.

What are your thoughts on this?

Yes, god forbid businesses ask for Spanish speakers to work for them since the majority of population is of Hispanic descent. Being monolingual is nothing to be too proud of, you know?

I am sure there where other reasons for your kid to fail in school - don't give me this BS about being the fault of non-English speakers. And be careful when you spew that Spanish speaker equals illegal immigrant. Your prejudice is showing.

Yes, I have never heard of a class other than a Spanish class being taught in Spanish in an American public school.

Of course, we're talking about the Left Coast so anything is possible.

They have classes HERE IN THE BORDER taught in Spanish BUT they are solely for ESL kids, they never mix the population, I think it's pure BS.

It's called my kid is not performing in school and it's easier to blame the Spanish speakers than get him some much needed tutoring syndrome :jest:

No, actually you misunderstand. I would have LOVED for my son to learn spanish...asked for a class for that in fact. He had no choice in the matter as the only opening in third grade in his school was that one...ONLY spanish. I wouldn't have minded if they also tutored him in english. He didn't fail because we cheated and switched schools. He just didn't understand the language. Also, I think it's great to be bilingual, especially in spanish here in California. However, I think for it to be a requirement in a lot of jobs is not right...just my opinion. People here should learn other languages, kind of like they require in European countries.

Reseda Elementry School in Reseda California in around 1992. The principle and I had a big discussion about that very fact.

So they put your english-speaking kid in a spanish-only class?

I call BS. Public schools are required to provide all children with an 'appropriate' education and for a child that speaks English, that isn't very appropriate.

Interesting that from my whole question, this is the topic emerging. Besides the fact that you decide if the school part is true or not...which it is....what is your take on the whole topic? I am not blaming anyone but the system for creating the illegal immigration issue in the first place. Can we stay on that topic?

Your words, not mine. Get your child some off-school tutoring. Plus, you do not know if all the other children in the class are also American born citizens. Don't assume.

and yes, it is California. Spanish is a de facto second language and no, it is not unfair that it is required for jobs that cater to Spanish speaking population. Don't like it? Move to Greenland.
