Different logic at work though, regardless. No one is tested for 'sickness'. Mind you, there would be money in performing tests to see if one had contagious disease prior to traveling and excluding anyone that does. Our VP would pay good money for that :)

Insurance companies routinely test for sickness and deny coverage to sick people.

Right or wrong, it's not illegal (at the moment.)

Indeed, they do!!!

And for "pre-existing conditions" that cost a lot less than ailments resulting from unhealthy living & obesity.

You aren't excluding fatties because they are unhealthy, you are excluding them because they weigh more and therefore, in this theory, more expensive to transport.

They do and are!!!! Plane tickets should be priced like postage--the heavier and bigger you are, the more room you take up- the more you pay.

(do I need flame retardant coveralls on now)?

I am excluding them because I fvcking can.

I nominate Randomizer as VP of SkinnyAir.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

I think the logic should go the other way-

Pay less for having less weight for them to heave. Sure, medical exceptions should be included so as not to penalize those that seriously can't slim down.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Not by airlines - no idea if it is illegal or not but I am sure people would pay more to ensure that they were not in the company of someone with swine flu. It's not a 'budget airline' angle, it's another 'luxury'.

Not going to happen, but nice one.

Sorry to burst your bubble, Cleo, but it is happening now. Fat people will pay more. Why not treat people like freight, and have them pay for their own weight?

I weigh 195, and pay a penalty when my bags weigh over 50Lbs. The 325 Lb guy needs to pay for the excess baggage that he is lugging around.

We should allot 300Lbs for each passenger and his luggage. Anyone bringing more than that on the plane pays extra. Very fair and simple.

Should airlines charge more for obese passengers?

by syracuse.com

Friday June 26, 2009, 11:36 AM

According to a report Friday on CNN.com, a growing number of airlines are creating policies to deal with heavier travelers. Some are requiring the obese to pay more for their seats or purchase a second seat at full price.

Many overweight travelers believe being charged extra is discriminatory. But frequent fliers like Ross Murphy, 54, disagree. Murphy told CNN, "They have a right to sit in the seat next to me, but they don't have a right to sit in my lap."

i thought we were excluding them because they take up more than one seat... but still pay the same price as the regular-sized person who's seat they are encroaching on...?

Yes, but dude or dudette weighing in at 300 lbs. with no luggage will still be crowding my seat!

That was what I understood too :) Mind you, it could be all very euphemistic...

I'll go along with that too I guess, it's just that I am sick and tired of only having half a seat and no arm rest because the person next to me has to have it up to be able to get in their seat.

I am liking the idea of FatAir and SkinnyAir. They would be more comfy on FatAir too-the seats would be bigger. I'm not unthoughtful like that.

I don't have bubbles to burst. Besides, I know this has been bandied about, but has it actually been implemented yet?

Yep.

Passengers requiring extra space - United Airlines policy

What it says is, they will implement this if the flight is full not prior so I am not sure that this is quite the same thing. They can in this way ensure that it's for the impingement of space and not for simply being a particular weight as well. I wonder if any really tall people have been affected yet?
