I am thinking about going to Mexico and I found out that being a permanent resident I will not need a visa. I did not receive the green card yet and I just have the extension letter. I am afraid about the immigration guards in Mexico not being familiar with this paper. Has anybody here experienced something like that?

Any advice will be appreciate.

Thanks, Jana.

I did go to Mexico with my PR card before expiry, had a few problems at the airport check in and boarding due to different names. Other than that i wasnt required to have a visa. HOpe this helps.

Thanks for your answer. Do you remember if they asked to see your extension letter? I've called mexico embassy and was told that should not have a problem about it but I'm still afraid about not being able to enter in mexico and waste all my money and time!

I know your situation is different, but I want you to know that my wife went through hell traveling through Mexico:

Double and triple check with the Mexican Consulate to be sure that Brazilians with Green Cards won't be harassed...

Hi,

Like others suggested. I would suggest to make an infopass as well and try to get I-551 stamp on your passport to be safe. Here's a recent account of a travel to Mexico from another VJ in the same situation.

Good Luck.

You should be fine... but nonetheless, why don't you make an Infopass appointment to get your passport stamped with the renewal? I tell you,Mexican immigration people are not the smartest cookies in the jar

Ha, i agree to this...

I don't know how the deal is through plane... but in a car, you just pretty much drive thru... mexican customs people MIGHT look intimidating.. but it's just a bunch of fat dudes eating all the time.

cheers!

I live about 14 miles from the mexican border so I have a little experience with them: from what I know when I had my greencard I had no problems, since submitting the removal of conditions I have not traveled out of the US but know others around here who have and did not have a problem. If you are concerned, do as others suggested: do an infopass and get the stamp in your passport.

Informação direta do Consulado Mexicano no Rio.

Residentes legais permanentes dos EUA, Canadá e Japão , SAINDO DESSES PAÍSES DIRETO AO MEXICO, precisam apresentar somente documento que acredite sua residência nos países citados e passaporte vigente.

If you have the extension letter, try making an infopass and getting a stamp, but either way the extension letter is enough proof that your status remains, so travel with your passport (MUST be valid), the expired GC and the extension letter, and you should be perfectly fine.

I am going to go to Mexico on July,5th and I am concerned as well.... I have the extension letter but had a typographical error and got another letter explained that was fixed... I am very worried because I need to travel with both letters..., Do you think I could get a I-551 stamp?

thank you
