Translation services for a letter?

I recently received a letter from my daughter's grandmother in Japan. It's entirely handwritten Japanese and I have no clue what it say. Since it came with some clothes for her it looks promising. So I'm trying to find a service online where I can get someone to translate letters back and forth for us. I did a quick google and most of what I found was geared towards businesses. The one "non-technical" place I found had a $200 minimum.

Does anyone know of any website that's not outrageous ($20-$40) for their services? I'm dying to know what this letter says and would like to start a working with a single company or individual for future correspondences. Thanks a lot

The cheapest way to translate something "unofficially", that is you don't need to submit the document to be a legal document, is to go to a community college and find a foreign student and ask that person if he or she can read and translate your document.

If you know someone conversant in English and Japanese, you could ask around, perhaps a local Asian food store, or Japanese restaurant. Surley someone will be kind enough to translate for you

If it is for USCIS all you need is for someone to do a literal translation and make notation like what USCIS recommends on the translation.

Please submit certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

I used this place to translate my documents for the visa application. Japanese Language Center. However, if you have time and a basic familiarity with the japanese language you could transcribe it over into an electronic format and then use a machine translator like this. World Lingo I used it as a translator for the documents also and with some understanding of how differences are of certain phrases works it is okay. However, I wouldn't use it to translate documents into Japanese.
