I remember the early T&J's - they used to show those in Britain. That's when Tom's mistress was a large caribbean woman right?

I think she was just the house maid. Her accent was more like someone from Alabama.

There's one scene where the sight of the mouse (Jerry) causes her to jump on chair and the gag is she has about 10 layers of clothing that she pulls up in different patterns, one by one.

Just like the classic Disney animated film, Song of the South. Last time I checked, Disney will not sell it here in the states, but you can buy it in Japan. Crazy.

I can't believe they are using the words "eeny meanie miney mo" in a Captain's D advertisement. Most people don't that one I guess.

There used to be Darkie toothpaste in Taiwan with a sambo looking guy on it. They changed it to Darling and White Man toothpaste- true story and I bought some to show people in the U.S.

Some people tried to ban Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn but I don't know if they're banned in some schools.

Do you remember the Sambo's restaurants? The artwork on the walls was great!

Yeah, there have been parents who have tried many book bans for various reasons, and most, if not all, fail. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn were required reading back in my high school english class.

I was going to say Sambo's, too.

"Though the name was taken from portions of the names of its founders, the chain soon found itself associated with The Story of Little Black Sambo. Battistone and Bohnett capitalized on the coincidence by decorating the walls of the restaurants with scenes from the book, including a dark-skinned boy and tigers. By the early 1970s, the illustrations depicted a light-skinned boy wearing a jeweled Indian-style turban with the tigers."

"By 1979, Sambo's had 1,200 outlets in 47 US states. However in the late seventies controversy over the chain's name drew protests and lawsuits in communities that viewed the term Sambo as a pejorative towards African-Americans, particularly in Northeast states."

I still remember seeing "lawn jockeys" even after that time period.

I remember eating there for breakfast and the artwork of the tiger chasing Sambo around a tree until he turned into a stack of pancakes. Hey, it worked for me.

Also all that silliness about an unlockable sex scene in the last GTA game, with Hillary Clinton jumping on the bandwagon.

My teenage son and his friends figured that one out in about 5 seconds. I was also surprised by the main character recharging his energy by hiring a hooker and doing the deed in a car as part of the game.

I have fond memories of Sambo's from vacation trips our family took; Sambo's was one of the restaurants we would go to after checking in to motels on our route :)

I actually found the image of the tigers (it was four tigers chasing each other, as I recall) turning into a stack of panckakes to be a little disturbing

And since the image of Sambo had changed to a light-skinned version, I didn't understand why he was called "Black" Sambo, when he wan't black :P
