Okay, since I have been critical of many cities and I have high standards of what a city should or should not look like, is there any place people recommend that meets the following criteria?

My criteria is:

  • One hour from the beach max, but will make an exception
  • Clean
  • Modern
  • Nice people (aka friendly)
  • Nice weather (hate cloudy cities and over snow)
  • Lots to do.
  • Side walks
  • Street Lights (usual civilized stuff)
  • Absolutely hate windy places or flat terrain.

Bloody keyboard, can't change the dam title.

I'm guessing Southern California. I'm in Northern California and it's perfect. 2 hours to the snow and 2 hours to the beach with every season year around. and LOTS to do

Normal down-to-earth people is the most important thing. I cannot stand the shitty better than thou (in love with myself) attitude in the DC area.

Looking at various parts of CA using streetview, CA is quite similar to Australia. My sister was recently here and loved the place.

I have lived in many areas in california and I have to say that Rocklin California was by far the best place. Its further from the beach than you would like but if you have kids and looking to raise a family there I would suggest Rocklin. Good schools, nice neighborhood and affordable prices. Another place I would suggest is Bend Or. but once again not close to the beach. There is some mountains if you love to snowboard and mountain bike riding is very huge here.
