According to their list of approved documents (proof of legal presence) http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/pdf/dmv141.pdf the PR/Green Card/I-551, if expired less than 1 year, can be used.

Hi marathiboy,

It sucks that " In Virginia, only way we can renew the license now, is with the actual green card", I hope you will get your 10 yr GC soon.

Good Luck.

 I just got mine done in MD, immigration law/docs...etc is Federal so they can not tell you no. I had to go through hell though because the employees are not trained at all and they do not know what they are talking about. Even their supervisor refused it and started telling me that she has "been working here for 18 years" and you need this and that. I asked her to speak to a manager, she took my extention and 2 proof of address forms to him and came back, she then took my picture and do the rest of the stuff without saying a word!!!! stupid people wasted 2 hours of my time on some stupid untrained employees, please ask for a manager, you're legal, you have a letter from the federal gov. proving that and you're entitled to a driver's licence. Good luck. Edited by MDresident

Which DMV did you go to? My wife went to one in NOVA with expired license and I-797C yesterday and no question was asked. You may want to try another office.

I had no problem this afternoon. I am really grateful! I paid the $20.00 and my license has been renewed for another year.

I produced my green card, extention letter & old driver's license, which they kept after they issued my new one.

Hello,

I am from Rhode Island, and my drivers licence will expire in January 12, 2013. In Rhode Island DMV website, it says "All non U.S. citizens must bring

all supporting documents to be reviewed"... I am on OPT until January 18, 2013 but I have a pending Green Card application as a spouse. What do you guys think about my chances of renewing my drivers licence ?

I'm surprised how the driver's license place would put you in a situation like that. When I recieved my green card, the driver's license place in kentucky gave me a driver's license valid for 4 years with the 2 years green card. Look an advice to whoever has to go through renewing a drivers license with the extension letter: Don't leave the DMV without talking to a supervisor or a manager, the extension letter is a government letter that by law extends your green card for a year. Tell them to do their job and get off their lazy a**es.

None in your case they not gonna give you an extension for 6 days.

You will need actual GC to get a DL.

Your case is different compared to OPs in OPs case their ROC was approved and they are waiting on the actual card to come in mail.

Hello,

We have approval notice (I-797) but we still have not received actual green card. Is that enough to get driver's license renewed in Virginia?

Thanks

s

You should have had a DL for a year from the date you filed for removal, as DMV does extend your DL based on the extension letter you get.

Now I think you just will have to wait until you get the card, which should not be that long.
