The tea parties are not "grassroots," but astroturf. A protest of tax rates that were put into place under George W. Bush, with a rate on the top bracket that's 10% below what it was under the first 6 years of Reagan. The "tea party" movement was not a spontaneous uprising, as some would like you to think, but sponsored by the likes of Fox News and right-wing thinktanks (FreedomWorks, etc.) and led by figures such as Newt Gingrich and ####### Armey. Fox News helped coordinate the protests on its web site, helping viewers find the nearest location, the times, and so forth. Given all of the effort, a bit over 300,000 turned out at several hundred locations, according to the best available estimates. It should be noted that I'm skeptical of some of these estimates, as I attended the Providence tea party, and there were definitely not 2000 in attendance. Likely 750, maybe 1000.

300,000 protesters is certainly something. But it's not much, considering the Fox News coverage and other support building up to the April 15th tea party day. A labor rally in Providence, RI turned out 4000 protesters in 2005, compared to the 1000 (my estimate) or 2000 (the Providence Journal) estimate. The national immigration rallies a few years ago drew millions, and the 2003 rallies against the upcoming invasion of Iraq drew 10,000,000 across the country, with single city's rallies well exceeding the tea party's 300,000 nationwide.

While I may be critical of the tea party's roots, and a tad harsh on their turnout, I must admit I was surprised by the diversity of the crowd. While a handful of counter-protesters turned out, I saw some similar messages in the tea partiers themselves. The event I attended in Providence lacked a single message. I couldn't help but laugh when some claimed "No taxation without representation." Apparently fairly elected officials only count as representation if you personally voted for them? I may not have thought George W. Bush represented me–he certainly did not represent my interests–but I never once considered Bush's election as a reason to protest paying taxes.

Isn't it funny that at a time when the President is enjoying some the highest approval ratings of any president. When the policies of the Democratic Party such as health care, dealing with global warming, enjoy an overwhelming majority of support, we have a minority who can't accept defeat and will continue to pout by pretending to drum up grass roots movements. Sad and amusing.

The GOP had 8 years to steer this country in the direction they wanted, in spite of going against much of what the American public supported. Now that minority needs to accept that Americans had enough of their shenanigans. The best they can hope for is failure from the Democrats, but they're so antsy, they've been declaring failure from day one of Obama's Presidency. Even when Obama has extended his hand to them, they want nothing but to continue playing partisan politics. So ** them.
