WASHINGTON -- A U.S. soldier opened fire on fellow troops and at least five were killed today, the Pentagon and U.S. Command said.

It was unclear if the shooter was among the dead in the shooting, which the U.S. Command said in a brief statement occurred about 2 p.m. at Camp Liberty near Baghdad International Airport. Pentagon officials first indicated that an Army soldier shot the others and then turned the gun on himself. Later, the officials said it was unclear whether the shooter was among the five dead.

It's actually a little surprising this thing doesn't happen more often when you consider the huge volume of people who have served over there ... armed and often in stressful jobs.

Also a number of mental defects are drawn to the military although most are weeded out.

Sounds like some heavy duty depression was at work.

The job also causes "mental defects".

"In Washington, Pentagon officials said the shooting happened at a stress clinic, where troops can go for help with the stresses of combat or personal issues. It was unclear whether those killed were workers at the clinic or were there for counseling. No details were released about the gunman or what might have provoked the shooting."

It's surprising there hasn't been more of this in the last 8 years of war. I assumed soldiers at a stress clinic wouldn't be armed but it is Iraq and one needs a weapon at the ready.
