My wife just came back from Japan.......

We received the letter of approval while she was in Japan.

She only brought the NOA1 along with her expired green card when she entered the US ( San Francisco )

At the airport's immigration, the officer question my wife and ask if that NOA1 she has with her is real.

They pulled my wife into a waiting room, while they verified that NOA1.

They later let my wife entering the SFO.

My wife was so afraid that they will deny her entry into the United States......

..i guess it's better to get a stamp from the USCIS office before leaving the country while peition is still pending to avoid the hassle and trouble,,,

Better get the I-551 stamp on your passport then, a little bit of trouble now can save you time going through unreasonable customs, especially if you're going through JFK or SFO.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I had the stamp in my passport and was still pulled into a room two weeks ago when i returned from vacation. I was pissed because it was 12midnight and i just wanted to get home....It was the first time it happen to me...I always use the 1yr ext letter and never had that problem before... I guess they just have to verify that it is legit...and i cannot blame them.

Well if you NOA, getting I-551 Stamp is very hard and depends on your luck and the IO(Immigration Officer). I tried it and after spending 10-15 minutes arguing with the IO, I finally gave up. He and his female colleague told me that Officers at the Entry Point and Employer will accept the letter no matter what it's an official document etc. So i guess it depends on immigration officer on the port and how you show them your epxression. Since it's just a letter so they might think people can photoshop it.

I agree with peb,

They are trying to match it's valid and not photoshop or fake which they would never do with a GC, another pain of having to go through I-751 besides wait

my wife is fine, knowing that she is a permenant resident (approved recently)

Another reason also is because that specific immigration officer is lack of experience that causes all the trouble....

but definetely, if anybody is to travel while petition pending,

bring all the NOA including the fingerprint NOA1, and also I-551 stamp from USCIS, then you are all set
