New Jersey Can’t Afford Government, Booker Says

15co604.jpg

May 5 (Bloomberg) -- New Jersey’s tax-strapped residents can’t afford their government and the state needs to rein in the mounting costs of public worker benefits, said the mayor of Newark, the state’s largest city.

Cory Booker, 40, said rising expenses for health care, pensions and salaries are impinging on government finances. Operations need to be streamlined in a state with 566 towns and cities, 617 school districts and 21 counties, Booker said during a meeting with Bloomberg editors and on Bloomberg Radio today.

“New Jersey will go bankrupt in 10 to 20 years because we cannot afford our employees as a state,” Booker said. “I’m talking about every worker from the cities and counties to the state government. Eventually, we’re going to price ourselves out as a government or tax ourselves to death.”

...

“There should be a tax revolt in the state of New Jersey,” Booker said. “We’re the most inefficient state in the country. We have more government per person than we need. You would never manage a business the way we manage our government - - we have overlapping provision of services and in my opinion, it’s insane.”

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

i fear i may be moving down South as well.

i have mixed feelings about it.

Nothing to fear. Much friendlier people and not as run-down or dog ugly as the north. Especially northern cities like NYC, Phili, Newark etc that are just atrocious to look at.

N.J. agency says budget deficit 'likely to exceed' $1.2B

A memo issued today by the nonpartisan Office of Legislative Services indicates initial April income tax estimates show about $800 million less was collected than earlier projections and 40 percent less than last year's collections.

"While some of the underlying component data are not yet available, it is clear the (income tax) collections were extremely weak," said David Rosen, budget and finance officer for the nonpartisan agency, in the memo.

...

Rosen's memo suggests the gap through June 30, 2010, may "exceed, perhaps significantly" the governor's $2 billion estimate.

So - about Mayor Booker - gay or no?

Discuss...

if he is, so be it.

as long as he does a good job.

thing about McGreevey was he was all broadcast news about it, and his marriage was a mess, and the scandal. NJ's got enough problems and a reputation to uphold, we can't have the guv crying on tv about being gay and cheating on his wife.
