Sorry for derailing your post. This new format does hold huge promise. It makes me wonder, however, if this also means my Hi-Def TV will also become obsolete sometime soon. Will 1080P be replaced with something much higher? I wonder what the limits of eye acuity are and at what point further resolution becomes redundant? Maybe walk around holograms are in our future?

There will be higher resolution in the future capable of higher than 1080p. Currently, those TV sets are worth about 50k-100k dollars. Since the future is about sustainability, new type of pixel materials are being experimented such as the OLED (uses less power, and may affect the resolution). The human eye will not be able to pick up much more.

Many TVs now has 120 hz refresh rate to 400 hz refresh rate. They are opening up the potential for 3D vision. The theory is by having the odd-interlace lines refresh at 60 hz, and the even-interlace lines refresh at 60 hz combining to 120 hz. This means with a pair of glasses set to seperate the odd and even lines will give you a 3d effect.

The military is working around holograms. I know they are using holograms projection as we speak. Hopefully, we'll see it in action sometime.

When we got our Blu-ray player I bought some Blu-ray DVD's to go with it. One of them was Journey to the Center of the Earth. It had a 3-D copy in it also. The effects were just OK because it was the old blue-red filter 3D type. I see that the newer TV's are "3D ready". I suppose it is because of the higher scan rates. Right now I have a ton of money invested in 3 HD tv's and it would take a huge leap in picture quality before I will be ready to go for something new. I have given up on trying to ride the curve when it comes to new technology. It moves to fast and is too expensive.
