Does anyone know what the giudlines are if someone loses their job during the process? I MAY get laid off sometime in the next several months, I have assets, will have a nice severance package if it happens, and should be able to find another job, but what if I need to fill out form I-134 while I'm laid off? Will I be turned down? I am thinking I should go ahead and find a different job now so I don't have to worry about it but I have been with this company since 2002 and would also be giving up tens of thousands of dollars in bonuses and severance.

What should I do?

only you can decide that.... you need to examine the risks/rewards and proceed accordingly.... I would hate to give up on $$$ based on what is described as a maybe situation.

YMMV

Your assets, including your severance would be counted as assets and if it is enough, you have no problems. For the I-134 your assets must be 3 times the required minimum annual income. For the I-864 to be filed with AOS, they must be 5 times the required amount. Now you can calculate the figures you need. You could also use a co-sponsor if it happens you are laid off at the time.

I wouldn't quit anything because something "might" happen. Get your other options in order just in case and stay at the higher paying job.

What is the required minimum? And the 'maybe' i'm speaking about is like a 70-80% definitely.

Look in the guides for the I-864P poverty guidelines. For two people it is about $18,300 per year, times 3 for the I-134, times 5 for the I-864 (to cover this amount with assets).

I wouldn't care if it was a 99.999999% certainty. Work at the higher paying job until they run your @ss off with a flamethrower. Line up a co-sponsor just in case
