once this system is in place, state sanctioned neighborhood sweeps (in public, you're subject), search warrants for houses known to harbour, and chain link fencing for la raza protests. 20 days in a detention camp to get papers you don't have handy, or it's out the door you go.

Nazi germany would be proud of you

everything but the 20 day guideline is already within the law. just a matter of enforcing it.

Crazy extreme!!!!

Its not the police that are detaining and deporting. Its immigration services, and if they do not have a fast accurate way to check someones status then shame on them. It remains that if you are a USC then you have proof of your status. None of us that will naturalize will carry proof with us at all times, if ever, but we would al know where that proof is located and be able to produce it quickly!!!

is there a document that says one is a naturalized citizen?

I agree, one should always be able to produce ID when suspicious.. but then, why is ICE so fast on pulling the trigger and starting deportation procedures on mainly hispanic USC without a complete investigation if they are USC's or not? just because their last names? they get deported?

is there a document? are you kidding?

if the illegals were predominantly anglo or asian, they'd be looked at harder. looking at mexicans as more likely to be illegal is just common sense. best estimate is that 30-40% of mexicans in the USA are illegal, while less than 1% of anglos, and less than 1% of asians are illegal. how are you going to rationalise the idea of looking at hispanics the same as anglos and asians?

good on you for being here legally. pay your taxes and be a great father to your kids, but don't try to cover for a bunch of illegals. that's bordering on aiding and abetting a felony crime.

well the common sense seems not to work here.. if it were a good method, ICE wouldn't fukc up that much.. what would you tell those families who happen to have a hispanic name, are USC's and got raided by ICE at some point? oh well, it's your peoples fault? get used to it?

It all depends on whether you value individual freedoms or just freedoms for certain racial groups. If you want to allow for some people to be treated differently because of the way they look well, have at it, but that is not the freedom that most of your compatriots, and mine fought for during WW2. Perhaps a refresher course on what rights are might be a good thing.

thank you..

it seems that because of the statistics, it's good to discriminate certain groups.. because they are prone to do evil.. it does sound a little familiar.. I think it has been done before no?

Yes, it has. Freedom is necessarily problematic as it does make it more difficult to police the populous. That it is difficult should not deter us one iota.

Martinez's stepfather, Florentino Mireles, said in a Feb. 27, 2008, affidavit that he called border inspectors to ask why they had taken Martinez's documents. The response, he said: An officer didn't believe Martinez was a U.S. citizen because he didn't speak English.

1. This is a ridiculous statement.

2. But at the same time I think there's some validity to it. I'm sorry but I do believe if you are going to be a citizen of a country you should be at the very least CONVERSATIONAL in the main language of the country. Now, I realize there is no official language in the USA but still. If I were to try to become a citizen in Germany, I would be required to fluently speak the language. Hell, if I wanted to go to school there, I'd have to fluently speak the language. Or in Spain. Or in France. Or in Italy. If it's important enough to live in the country, then it damn well should be important enough to speak the language fluently. Just my .02...

It isn't mandatory in any of those named countries to be able to speak/understand the language proficiently. There will be a % of people unable to do so.

No one should be able to be abused by authorities because they can't speak the language. There are many people who are mentally ill who can't speak any language fluently, are we to hose them down too?

pedro,

you read the article. less than 0.01% of people detained were mistakenly deported, and that because of mental illness. $hit happens. ICE should get a medal for an error rate that low.

doctors in the US kill 487 times as many people in preventable medical accidents every year as are killed accidentally with firearms. now THAT's a crime.

Now now MC you know the point she is making. Citizenship requires a test of english language prociency, therefore logic should dictate that if they are USC's they would be able to converse in English.

Permanent residnce and others wit legal status is a different story, but this is about USC's.

It's a rare occurrence granted, but it's no less relevant because of that circumstance. There should be no possibility that a person is evicted from their home country based on their lack of communication skills. I am sure ICE are perfectly able to produce a translator should one be required.

Nazi germany would be proud of you

I hate it when people refer to Nazi Germany when the subject revolves around whatever it is they dislike. Calling the U.S. and its current policies the same or even remotely related to Nazi Germany is not only ludicrous, but severely insulting towards those who lived through that time period. There's a huge difference between looking to evict illegal aliens versus loading "undesirables" into freight cars to get burned in ovens or gassed.

If some people can't figure this out, then maybe they need to crack open a history book. Try actually learning something.

I agree, but if you can't speak english when confronted by an immigration official then don't be surprised to be hauled in and your status thoroughly checked out. Again ICE seems to have a problem in knowing who is who and that is the real concern (along with racial stereotyping).
