Danno... you say you wouldn't allow your children to go over to a gay couples house to play. When your children ask if they can go over, will you just say "No" without reason... or is this when you begin to teach your children the same intolerances that you have?

How would you know if their parents are gay? What if it was a single gay parent?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that most parents probably don't care overmuch about the parents of their kids friends as much as whether the kid's friend is some sort of troublemaker.

Well as far as the white supremacists go - it would be a moot point for you as likely the parents would be telling their kid to not play with yours. Not to say that being the child of a white supremacist, makes their child a racist by default - but it certainly doesn't create a good environment.

That said I'm thinking that a lot of times you wouldn't necessarily know what's going on - of course we're talking about extremes here and as far as those examples go - it wouldn't be easy to disguise white supremacism or drug dealing (and that of course, would say a lot about the neighborhood in general).

That said, I don't think you have to be close friends with the parents of your childrens friends.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that most parents probably don't care overmuch about the parents of their kids friends as much as whether the kid's friend is some sort of troublemaker.

Unless you are somewhat of a busy body, this stuff is hardly going to come up in ordinary small talk, which let's face it is about the level that most parents work at. Unless there is some specific reason for the parents to be more than acquaintances, it's not like there is some rule of thumb that states that the parent's of the kids your kid is friends with is definitely be someone you would like to pal around with.

These are all possible situations one could have to make a decision about, yes they are all different

from each other and depending on your outlook in life, one might be an apple or an orange.

The only thing amazing about this thread and many of the posters is how "out of touch" they are.

I say I would not let my child play over at the gay couples house and some of you get -wind in your mouth-.

You must have a limited group of friends with a small perspective in life because my view is in the majority.

On the other hand I know plenty of people who WOULD think it was "wonderful" to expose their kids to all kinds of (left-leaning) diverse people.

This does not get me all wound-up or cause me to not hang out with them or to try to convert them to my "enlightened" style of raising kids, but boy the left, wants to control everyone.

I don't know. Evangelicals tend to make it quite clear that they are. Polyamists, the ones I knew in India (it's "legal" there if you're Muslim) were also obvious polygamists. As for homosexuals, well that depends on how 'flamboyant' they are

Racists tend to be the most difficult to detect. Minor racism I can live with, I am a minor leagues racist myself (I think). But have swastika stickers on your car or even a Confederate flag in your living room... and I draw the line. That ish is fvcked up.

So you would personally conduct an interview with all of the parents of your kids friends to find out whether they hold attitudes or have lifestyles which you find "harmful" so that you can forbid your child from hanging out with them?

If you have people living around you who put confederate flags and/or swastikas on their cars - it probably has a lot to do with the area where you live.

People talk...from my short experience of working at a small private school, people know things without even having to ask. Word gets around, I doubt anyone would let their kids go play at someone's house that they knew almost nothing about.
