I'm not sure what silk paper is exactly so my answer my not be completely accurate! I think in general it is best to follow the rules 100% and if it is possible for you to get a new picture quite easily, then I would suggest getting a new picture. On the other hand, I worked as a photo lab tech for a while and the two types of photo paper that most places have available in the US is glossy and matte. I think that when they ask for a glossy picture, they are most likely asking for a picture that is not matte. So I guess it is up to you. If the silk paper gives off a more glossy sheen then it most likely it okay, but maybe not. To be on the safe side, I'd get it re-done!

thanks for the reply. in the philippines when we have our photos developed they ask if its glossy or silk. then maybe matte and silk are the same. silk paper is something that is not smooth when you touch it. well anyway i really need to follow the rules. still need to send it to my fiance which will take me 3 weeks throught the post office.

Yeah, that sounds like matte paper. Matte paper does not have that glossy sheen and it is a bit rough under your fingers when you touch it. I'd get a new one since they specifically ask for a glossy one! Sorry!! I perfer matte/silk as well...but we do as USCIS commands! Good luck!

Photo FAQ US State Department

I see nothing that specifies what type of paper (glossy/matte) that can be used.

As long as the image meets the other requriements, and is sharp/clear, you should be fine.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

WARNING: Phrases in this post may sound meaner than they were intended to be. Read the Adjudicator's Field Manual from USCIS

This is from the instructions for the I-129F, regarding the photos. IT HAS TO BE GLOSSY!

Give USCIS a passport-style color photograph of yourself and a passport-style color photograph of your fiancé(e), with both photos taken within 30 days of the date of filing this petition. The photos must have a white background, be glossy, un-retouched and not mounted. The dimension of the full frontal facial image of you and your fiancé(e) in separate photos should be about one inch from your chin to the top of your hair. Using a pencil or felt pen, lightly print the name (and Alien Registration Number, if known) on the back of each photograph.
