That's not a dumb question but a good question. It is when an adjudicator physically touches your file and it is being processed. We get emails when we register on the USCIS site and that's when we know our case is being "touched". Look in the FAQ and you will see more descriptions okay?

Just to clarify... A "touch" does not necessarily mean your petition is being processed. It simply means that it has been scanned. It could have simply been moved from onen location to another. Adjuticator's are not all created equally... some people will go without a 'scan' for the entire process and some are touched repeatedly.

It can mean anything ...or nothing.

I don't think my petition has been "touched", but how would I know.

I have a really, really funny laugh-til-you-cry photo here that will show you exactly how to know you have been "touched" and if I had a clue how to add it this post, I sure would.

"touches" in the USCIS sense are basically worthless information designed to prevent you fro calling them and interrupting their games of solataire. They mean, basically, nothing, in ters of processing your case and are not "good news" in any case. Most cases go from NOA1 to NOA2 without a "touch" When you least expect it, you will open your mailbox and the NOA2 will be there.
