I think the numerous brutality cases are indicative of something.

I still can't understand why anyone would throw their lot behind a guy like that just because he's on the "right" side of the illegal immigration debate.

it does suggest that the debate in those circles is driven by xenophobia and outright hatred. Plenty of legitimate arguments of course but sheriff Joe doesn't seem to represent them.
