20 people? that's sometimes what's lost in a usa city during a heat wave.

Add the fire-related death toll to that.

why?

Because I believe these were Bushfires for the most part. Deeply worsened by the lack of available groundwater. Consequence: fire. Effect: increased evaporation from the subsoil. Cause: Higher temps in that area.

quit switching gears like that :bonk: i'm talking about a usa city and you run back south of the equator!

however, the cause of death in the cases you mention would be fire, would they not?

Of course, you can always blame fire related deaths on overpopulation, as more people reside in wilderness areas.

The point being though, that what the scientists are worried about is not the ave highs and lows in particular spots on the globe but the average global temperature.

With major questions being asked is too how accurate these measurements are. IR technology is new on satellite observations, I do have one of the most expensive IR thermometers made, but know enough only to use it for an approximation, accurate measurements are made the old fashion thermistor way. It's like these test tube sized rain gauges that practically every farmer owns. Try to tell them, that only shows the rain that fell in that square cm area, but could get entirely different results if they even moved it one inch. They should buy thousands of them and get the average.

Our PBS radio is always having a talk show on global warming, tempted to buy a hybrid, so I can call in and tell everyone how good I am and how bad the rest of you are.

Sat. IR imaging of SST and global temp as a whole is NOT new.

What application is your "IR thermometer" used for? Is it a hand held meteorological analysis one or some engineering app? ( the reason I ask is that the only place I have seen IR thermometers in use is at Boeing; and they were handheld, intrinsically safe ones that measured the surface temp of solid aircraft components).

I am genuinely interested. :)

They sell them at Harbor Freight. Lots of mechanics use them for checking surface temperatures.

Where intensity of observation is due to the localization of a near heat source. This can give reliable results. Satellite IR spectra are quite different in the mode of operation and temperature extrapolation when compared to baseline readings.

i was trying to remember what cities had fires, and i didn't think the fire in chicago in 1871 was related somehow.

Another point on this subject, global warming data is based on only very small fractional differences in temperature, with no tolerance given. Everything has a tolerance, well, with exception with dealing with people that are intolerant. Ha, better to just walk away.

But, there are majors concerns besides potential global warming, what took millions of years for the earth to form is rapidly being burnt away, and oil wells and coal mines do run dry. Our trade deficits are extremely of major concern, and we can't go on the way we have been going on for the last 200 years. The railroads in this country consumed over 25 million square miles of forests in just the short time they were burning wood. And that was never replanted. Thinking about the future is also out the question when we have a government that can only think in terms of the next election. We do have major problems and better means have got to be found.

The only difference between human slavery and freedom is low cost energy, that is really something to think about. Global warming whether true or not, is just a very minor side issue and certainly not the key one with our energy usage and the price our country has to pay for it that also includes, wars.

You mean confidence intervals where data that doesn't meet significance testing is discarded as insignificant in scale compared to 'control' means? E.G. Mean summer temp somewhere = 25 degrees C. Observed mean summer temp (year X) = 30 degrees C. You can do a t-test quite simply for this observed mean value and determine that there is a very slim probability that this 30 degree observation is a fluke. And the more independent measurements of mean seasonal temperatures you get, the more reduced this slim possibility becomes within the models proposed thus far. Hence, it is reported as a novel, significant departure from the normal mean. I think scientists likely know a little bit more about how to tabulate and report data within responsible means don't you think?

The rest of your sociopolitical analysis has nothing to do with the science behind GW.

But this is one of the pitfalls people fall into... thinking that fractional differences mean nothing when looking at mean, global scale issues.

Thought HAL 9000 was already obsoleted by Windows Vista, can you actually run Vista based programs? Or do you need a new processor?

The effects of global warming are more significant than global warming itself, like leaving everything else the same and paying a carbon tax. Especially to third world countries. More of our money leaving this country.

And still the issue of natural or man made global warming and exactly what that ratio is. Can't sue nature, but sure in the hell can sue man.

Why would I run Vista on my Heuristic programming? That would be like using quicksand on a concrete sidewalk.

The political effects you mean. And its not exactly a ratio per se... rather a combinatorial thing. Not something you can dissociate from the other very easily given the effects occur within the same physical parameters.

Oh sh!t AJ... we need more of your sh!t stirring... Gosh I miss the old science lessons. ^_^

Just so I understand - are you saying the following statement is untrue?

... global temperatures have flatlined since 2001 despite rising greenhouse gas concentrations.

Didn't I read somewhere that you had disappeared
