Climate determines average weather :)

Climate determines "LOCAL" average weather. See, even we can't even agree, which was my main point.

Not ness. at all.

'Local ' weather is determined and influenced by alot of things.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

The point being though, that what the scientists are worried about is not the ave highs and lows in particular spots on the globe but the average global temperature.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

With major questions being asked is too how accurate these measurements are. IR technology is new on satellite observations, I do have one of the most expensive IR thermometers made, but know enough only to use it for an approximation, accurate measurements are made the old fashion thermistor way. It's like these test tube sized rain gauges that practically every farmer owns. Try to tell them, that only shows the rain that fell in that square cm area, but could get entirely different results if they even moved it one inch. They should buy thousands of them and get the average.

Our PBS radio is always having a talk show on global warming, tempted to buy a hybrid, so I can call in and tell everyone how good I am and how bad the rest of you are.

Recall when Mount Saint Helen blew her cork, we had a -45*F winter, also read our trend of global warming peeked out at 1999, not 2001, but hell, that is just a couple of years.

Also read an article where average temperatures are recorded from boxes located at airports where inside of the box is much hotter than the ambient causing all the data to be inaccurate.

We may be aware that congress disagrees, but all that stuff they talk about is arbitrary, when it comes to science, everyone should agree, don't know exactly the odds, but when it comes to global warming, seems to be about 50-50, should be 100-0, either way, who cares.

Some are called idiots on this board because the don't know the difference between weather and climate, but average weather determines climate. Sure there are guys in Australia screaming about global warmer, here in Wisconsin, we had the coldest winter in recorded history last year with subzero weather in both October and March that is very unusual.

But it is politically correct for us to say we have global warming, so let's be politically correct. This entire subject was on the backburner until Gore made his cartoon movie, now everyone is talking about it. He didn't get that Nobel prize for the contents of his cartoon, but for bringing this to our attention, but anyway, let's all buy a hybrid car. Wonder if Gore is getting a commission on that?

Got lots of respect for you Nick... but you don't have much understanding of climatology and the way natural factors combine to influence immediate weather patterns do you?

People have been having winter weather during winter weather season for as long as I can remember.

Look around the world other than your locale. You might notice a little something more extreme other than a really cold winter. Particularly, at this time of year... its summer in the Southern Hemisphere. And guess what? They're really having a scorcher. In fact... hotter (according to them), than any previously recorded summer. That's weather for you.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

20 people? that's sometimes what's lost in a usa city during a heat wave.

Cites upon request. I did not claim what they do- if perhaps you bothered to read my post. :P

(FWIW, I made my ' they claim' comment upon what my Aussie friends tell me- including one of my colleagues working at USydney)

Add the fire-related death toll to that.

Sat. IR imaging of SST and global temp as a whole is NOT new.

What application is your "IR thermometer" used for? Is it a hand held meteorological analysis one or some engineering app? ( the reason I ask is that the only place I have seen IR thermometers in use is at Boeing; and they were handheld, intrinsically safe ones that measured the surface temp of solid aircraft components).

I am genuinely interested. :)

why?

Because I believe these were Bushfires for the most part. Deeply worsened by the lack of available groundwater. Consequence: fire. Effect: increased evaporation from the subsoil. Cause: Higher temps in that area.

They sell them at Harbor Freight. Lots of mechanics use them for checking surface temperatures.
