Pelosi remembers that the democrats lost the house majority in 1996 in voter's retribution for the Klinton AWB. Does not want to loose her spot, so tells Eric Holder to hold it. Has prolly also been advised that Justice Roberts killed any chance of a credible AWB in the Heller decision, anyway. Justashooter orders 3 more AR15 parts kits on spec. Figures he can build them for under $700 each, and sell them to newbs for $1200 each, making a cool $1500 in the deal. J&T distributing tells him they are on 8 week backorder. Justashooter rubs his hands in glee, expecting the price will be $1300 by then.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tossed cold water on the prospect of reinstating the assault weapons ban, highlighting Democrats’ reluctance to take on gun issues.

Attorney General Eric Holder raised the prospect Wednesday that the administration would push to bring back the ban. But Pelosi (D-Calif.) indicated on Thursday that he never talked to her. The Speaker gave a flat “no” when asked if she had talked to administration officials about the ban.

“On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now,” Pelosi said at her weekly news conference. “I think it's clear the Bush administration didn’t do that.”

Outside of the dig at the recent Republican president, that phrase is the stock line of those who don’t want to pass new gun control laws, such as the National Rifle Association.

The White House declined to comment on Holder's remarks, referring reporters to the Department of Justice. The DoJ did not respond to The Hill's request for comment.

That means there's not going to be any legislation proposed. This amounts to lots of worrying over nothing.

Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban

Previous Ban Expired in 2004 During the Bush Administration

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25, 2009—

The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

"As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder told reporters.

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

"I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum." Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S.

Mexican government officials have complained that the availability of sophisticated guns from the United States have emboldened drug traffickers to fight over access routes into the U.S.

A State Department travel warning issued Feb. 20, 2009, reflected government concerns about the violence.

"Some recent Mexican army and police confrontations with drug cartels have resembled small-unit combat, with cartels employing automatic weapons and grenades," the warning said. "Large firefights have taken place in many towns and cities across Mexico, but most recently in northern Mexico, including Tijuana, Chihuahua City and Ciudad Juarez."

At the news conference today, Holder described his discussions with his Mexican counterpart about the recent spike in violence.

"I met yesterday with Attorney General Medina Mora of Mexico, and we discussed the unprecedented levels of violence his country is facing because of their enforcement efforts," he said.

Holder declined to offer any time frame for the reimplementation of the assault weapons ban, however.

"It's something, as I said, that the president talked about during the campaign," he said. "There are obviously a number of things that are -- that have been taking up a substantial amount of his time, and so, I'm not sure exactly what the sequencing will be."

In a brief interview with ABC News, Wayne LaPierre, president of the National Rifle Association, said, "I think there are a lot of Democrats on Capitol Hill cringing at Eric Holder's comments right now."

During his confirmation hearing, Holder told the Senate Judiciary Committee about other gun control measures the Obama administration may consider.

"I think closing the gun show loophole, the banning of cop-killer bullets and I also think that making the assault weapons ban permanent, would be something that would be permitted under Heller," Holder said, referring to the Supreme Court ruling in Washington, D.C. v. Heller, which asserted the Second Amendment as an individual's right to own a weapon.

The Assault Weapons Ban signed into law by President Clinton in 1994 banned 19 types of semi-automatic military-style guns and ammunition clips with more than 10 rounds.

"A semi-automatic is a quintessential self-defense firearm owned by American citizens in this country," LaPierre said. "I think it is clearly covered under Heller and it's clearly, I think, protected by the Constitution."

Wake-up my friend~!

Look at the title: "Pelosi wants to re-instate the Eric Holder ban"

That's pure fiction based on the very article Shooter posted.

..............

As for whether Obama wants to see legislation on it or not is a different story, but it sounds like a lot of hot air over nothing to me.

There's not much in the Constitution Obama likes. When will his followers wake up?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

What national gun laws are the responsibility of the Federal Government to enforce- and which ones went unenforced?

none. this is just pelosi shifting blame like a typical democrat. it happens all the time, even on this board. no matter what is wrong, pelosi is gonna say it is bush's fault. even if nothing is wrong, she's gonna say it's bush's fault. the fed.gov is doing a great job in enforcing gun laws, with the notable exception of the NFA registry, which is a mess.

it's the states that are failing, mostly due to lack of funding, as in the case of the korean virginia tech shooter. he had a disqualifying condition under state and federal law, yet was not entered into the disqualified list by the state records division after a virginia judge ajudicated him. the state of virginia is directly responsible for the deaths of those 33 students, but you will never get virginia to admit fault.

violent crime in the US is declining dramatically in the caucasian population, as a result of roe vs wade, which has recently changed the age demographics of the caucasian population and reduced the number of males between 17 and 35 in the white population.

blacks, which often scream that abortion is genocide against blacks, yet reproduce in numbers nearly double that of whites, are about as crime prone as they were 30 years ago. they are also about the same share of the total population, and seem unaffected by roe vs wade.

hispanics are inceasingly likely to be involved in violent crime when considered on a per capita basis, and are increasing in numbers. their share of violent crime has trippled in the last decade.

the net result is a slight reduction in violent crime, but we will see an upward trend within the next decade if hispanic immigration is not curbed. pedro and his ilk will howl like banshees when they read this, but the truth is the truth, my friends, and has been repeatedly demonstated on this board, so i'm not gonna waste time doing it again.

so we have a reduction in crime in the US, and holder can't figure any better rationale for violating civil rights than drug violence in mexico. automatic weps and hand grenades? you can't just pick them up at a gun show. buying such collectors items involves intensive federal oversight and delayed delivery, and at enormous expense. his argument is bullshit, just like the majority of liberal arguments.

that being said, i'm still gonna make a ton of money on newbs who wake up to the realisation that their rights are under attack and that the underclass is increasing in number and propensity for violence, so their safety is going out the window. i was at a gunshow on sunday, watching self described liberals buying semi-automatic sport utility rifles. they were paying any price, and panicked. sheep to the slaughter for a wolf like me. next on the block, some TEC9 pistols that never ran worth a #######, but look really evil and black and have BARREL SHROUDS (gasp!).

know what a barrel shroud is? carolyn mccarthy doesn't, but she doesn't want you to have one...

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will join Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in opposing any effort to revive the 1994 assault weapons ban, putting them on the opposite side of the Obama administration.

Reid spokesman Jim Manley said the Nevada Democrat will preserve his traditional pro-gun rights voting record.

“Senator Reid would oppose an effort (to) reinstate the ban if the Senate were to vote on it in the future,” Manley told The Hill in an e-mail late Thursday night.

It was not immediately clear whether Reid would block the bill from the Senate, but his opposition casts serious doubt on its chances. Also, Manley noted that Reid voted against the ban in 1994 and again when it expired in 2004.

Reid’s stance joins him with Pelosi, who told reporters Thursday that the administration had not checked with her before Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters the administration would attempt to reinstate the ban. Pelosi gave a flat “no” when asked if she had spoken to Holder or any other administration officials about the issue.

“On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now,” Pelosi said at her weekly news conference. “I think it’s clear the Bush administration didn’t do that.”

Outside of the dig at the recent Republican president, that phrase is the stock line of those who don’t want to pass new gun control laws, such as the National Rifle Association.
