Just wondering.. I went to a Social Security Office last Friday here in PA to get a SS Number.. But the lady told us that I need to go to the immigration first to change my status before applying for a SSN 'cause it's not really necessary for me to get one since I'm not working..

We did got a form though for my SS but as I was reading page 2, it says, "If I am a legal alien not allowed to work, I must provide a document from a US Federal, State, or local government agency that explains why I need a SSN and that I meet all of the requirements for the US government benefit. Note: Not all US State or local benefits are acceptable for non-work SSN purposes. Contact SSA to see if your reason qualifies."

So, what kind of reason should I provide the SSA to give me my SSN before going through the process of changing my status..?

You need to show them your K-1 visa, and valid I-94 card.

I'm going to get my SSN this week because I'm here in the US for two weeks now, but i just wonder why I really need to get SSN? I do not plan to work here for now because I'm still adjusting and learning the place..

Yep, for the most part K-1 IS "Work Auth" primarily to be able to get the SSN, some states are strict in their interpretation of a federal law that requires persons applying for a "license" to have SSN, this can cause a problem with marriage license if only one person has SSN and the other (the K-1 holder) does not.

After marriage some SSA officers can make it difficult issuing the SSN because the reason to issue (Getting Marriage License) no longer exists.

Again take a copy of the SSA webpage, OR visit a different SSA office perhaps in a larger city.

It is much, much easier to be added to your husband's medical insurance and bank accounts if you have an SSN.

SSN is NOT workauthorization, you will need EAD or Green-card to be able to get a Job.

SSN is used for many other purposes besides work.

Some examples:

• Insurance and/or medical purposes
• Bank accounts

I see you just got married you should take a copy of your k-1 visa and I-94 to obtain your ssn. Someone there is to lazy to look in the computer to see that you have a valid status with Homeland Security. You have up to I believe two weeks before your k-1 expires from date of entry to obtain your SSN after that you must wait until you recieve EAD card or Green Card.
