Racist?

I am totaly confused. Some have replied as if the term coonhound was suggested as racist term - thats not what was said in the original post.

I was told by a cousin that ####### was racist term.

####### *is* a racist term, not coonhound. I dont know any situation where one would refer to their coonhound as *#######* so why is this even an issue?

"#######" isn't used to refer to a coonhound, but to what a coonhound hunts, i.e., a racoon.

I realize coonhound comes from hound that hunts racoons. Im just saying - who would say my hound hunts 'coons (and therefore inadvertantly be using a racist term)?

Still the cousin is right - ####### is a racist term - although it has nothing to do with the breed of dog.

Looking at it the way things have been, its been more like several kinds of rotten apples. As time has come and gone, the rot has spread to those that were not rotten before.

Man, that is depressing!

Yep. It would be nice but unrealistic to have to get rid of all of the bad apples... but it would be honest to go after the most rotten ones first.

People that dont know ####### to be anything other than a derogatory term for black people might take it wrong, they might think that the name was given to these hound dogs because they were used to hunt black people. I believe this might be my cousins concern.

Sure if I was to get my #### kicked in south central for mentioning my coonhound it would not be right or justified but I still would be hurting because of the a@#kicking I received and that I dont want that.

I was simply just trying to get a better perspective on the word ####### and what it means to different people. I mentioned in one of the first posts that Wikipedia recognized coonhound.

not all know that it is a recognized breed, I had to check myself. Sure ignorance isnt a excuse but the problem is that there not going to pull out a laptop and google it before they decide if they should kick my a#@. Its up to me to make sure I dont put myself in dangerous situations, so I was trying to get more info on this word.

calling a raccoon '#######' = not racist

calling a black person '#######' = racist
