 Why, yes, I have :P Though I recalled learning that the Universe was around 14 billion years old from a class taught by an astronomer before Al Gore invented the Internet, and I'd never heard that age had been signifcantly downgraded, so I found the 10 billion year age a bit suspicious.

I like this stuff:

Taking into account the huge distance from earth of the burst, scientists worked out that the blast was stronger than 9,000 supernovae -- powerful explosions that occur at the end of a star's lifetime -- and that the gas jets emitting the initial gamma rays moved at nearly the speed of light.

wow that's a big un!

A "Big Bang" perhaps?

The visible universe is about 10 to 12 billion years old. It took a few billion years for the stars to form and turn on the lights.

The Big Bang was earlier than this event, and cannot be directly observed.

This gamma-ray burst still fits within the far end of that estimate.

If, like us, you consulted Wiki, you will have read that in the beginning - well, sometime after the beginning, the universe was somewhat foggy, the universe's Dark Age. Only later did transparency reign :D

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Perhaps surprisingly, I wasn't trying to, just thought it was an interesting 'fact'.

Ok. And, yes, I did read that.
