Wow. Just wow. I didn't think part 2 would be as exciting as part 1 but I was obviously mistaken. Glad that all of you have arrived safe and sound and can relax 'at home'.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

The next morning we managed to get an early start and had a relatively sane drive until we got to Dallas..... The traffic was horrendous!!! I mean bumper to bumper... even when we got I-45 from Dallas to Houston - there were just insane amounts of vehicles. We drove and drove and then we stopped.... litterally on the road. There was a traffic jam by Huntsville, TX. We sat on the road between Huntsville and Houston for over two hours. We moved a little bit but not much above 10 mph. Lily was screaming at this point. We are trying like hell to just get to the house. Finally we make it to Houston... Little did I know but John decided to take us on the biggest roads he could find in the city... I-45, Beltway 8, I-10!!! I have drove in cities like Edmonton, Saskatoon, Calgary but never in traffic like this..... I was totally nerve wracked! But we made it to the house without a scratch.. Thank God!

Congrats on making it to your new home. Katy is a nice area and you'll have access to Katy Mills Mall.

Overall, I'd say West Houston is the nicest area of the city. If you feel like driving a little ways, stop off at the Galleria, Highland Village or go downtown. You can easily get to downtown using I-10, just stay off the 610 Loop. One word of warning about downtown: Watch out for the MetroRail. For some reason or another, the "geniuses" behind that decided to make it silent and give little-to-no warning that it's moving. There have been tons of accidents involving the MetroRail colliding into cars.

I've lived in Houston my whole life and I know I-45, I-10 ("the Katy Freeway") and Beltway 8 like the back of my hand. Once you get into Houston, the freeways become insane. God, I love that.

I'm sorry you had such bad traffic on the way and that you got stuck between Houston and Huntsville. I hate Huntsville. It's a nice place to blow through at 60 MPH, but it's an extremely depressing place. That might be why the major TDCJ prison system is there.

One thing I've realized about Canadian highways is that the overall speed traveled seems to be a lot lower than what I was accustomed to in Texas. For instance, speeds seem to reach maximum of 80 KM/H, which is about 50 MPH. I'm used to driving somewhere around 80 MPH (roughly 130 KM/H) on the freeway.

Really? Most highways in Canada are 100 KM/H, Alberta it's 110 KM.

I was thinking the same thing, here in SK the speed limit on most highways is 100km some 110. If the limit is 100....everyone around me is driving 110-120...if the limit is 110 they are doing 120-130.

That's so odd! I've noticed completely the opposite, but then I really only have Ontario and Quebec as my point of reference for driving in Canada. The biggest difference I've noticed is that in Texas (from what I've seen) and all of the other states I've driven in, most people actually obey the speed limits, and it kinda drives me nuts! I'll have to get used to that. From what I've seen, the flow of traffic is usually around +/- 5m/h of the speed limit, even on major highways (or freeways or whatever you want to call 'em). Heh. That doesn't normally happen here. I'm guessing the difference is in how the speed limit is enforced. For example, the highest posted speed limit here in Ontario is 100km/h (or 62m/h), but generally speaking, one will rarely (if ever) be issued a ticket for driving at 120km/h (or 75m/h). I've never seen it happen anyway. And in places like the GTA, the flow of traffic on the highway is usually going anywhere between 120-140km/h (except during rush hour, of course). Somewhat related, if I'm in Quebec, I try to stay within 15-20km/h of the speed limit on highways. Call me paranoid if you want, but I've seen people with Ontario plates get ticketed for some pretty ridiculous things.

Speed limits in BC are lower, and mostly 80km/h. Every other province its 100 or higher.

So, hows the weather in Texas? Got a tan yet? :D

I am SO glad you're in your home now and safe. What a horrifying experience!! You're a wonderful writer. I was at the edge of my seat.

You deserve a ton of kudo's for the drive, for I'm sure calming your kids while you're trying not to freak...heck, for not leaving back to Canada after you got there! j/k

Welcome to the USA. Put up your feet and take a few days to settle down. Wow. Just wow!

I am so glad you made it safe and sound! I often wonder why those of us who have chosen to immigrate and follow our hearts by marrying someone of another nationality have to go through such challenges! You have def proven you are up for a challenge and you really did beat that one! Your adventure was really great reading (maybe as some suggested a best-seller?) but I am happy you are home safe and sound and you are all together at long last!

The weather here is amazing! I haven't gotten a tan yet - mainly because I've been unpacking.

I'm so glad our trip is over. Thanks for all the well wishes! I can't imagine anyone ever having a worse trip than we had! But today my mom called and said it's -34 and they have snow up to their yingyang so I'm so happy I'm here and not there!
