My husband and I are going to go through seperation and then divorce--I've already gone through immigration and am a permanent resident of the USA with no conditions. However, because I needed to get out fast and be somewhere safe, I ended up returning to my family in Canada. I have my permanent resident card here with me, and showed it at the border when I came back into Canada. Now, I thought I'd heard that if I was to be out of the states 6 months or longer, I could (or would?) lose my status as a permanent resident there. I'd rather not lose it because I would like to possibly still live there in the future on my own, but my current financial situation means I may have to stay in Canada for 6 months or more. Is there a way to be sure I don't lose my status as a permanent resident in the states while I'm here? Thanks!

Editing to add that I've only been here since just after new years, and I didn't file a change of address yet with USCIS or anything like that because I wasn't sure if I would be leaving my husband or not. Also, my name is on our apartment lease along with my husband's in Virginia.

Google, "maintaining permanent resident status".
