A new food-based treatment could save the lives of thousands of malnourished children in some of the poorest parts of the world, it has been claimed.

Children across sub-Saharan Africa and parts of India are suffering from malnutrition with figures showing that the condition leaves an estimated one million children dead each year.

It is hoped, however, that the new product could help to save thousands of lives and nurse malnourished youngsters back to life.

Officials say that the peanut-butter-based food looks set to be particularly effective as it can be locally made and will therefore aid youngsters who are too weak to travel to hospital.

Cheap to make, the 'meal' is made up of peanuts, milk, sugar and vegetable oil and does not need to be kept refrigerated.

There is also no need to add any water, which would be a problem for many families living in rural areas away from an accessible water point.

It can also be used in townships where there is a lack of basic hygiene as the fact that it does not include water makes it difficult for bacteria to form in it.

In a statement, the UN, which is backing the introduction of the food, said: "When implemented on a large scale and properly combined with hospital treatment for children with complications, community-based management of severe acute malnutrition could prevent the deaths of hundreds of thousands of children each year."

Margaret Chan, director general of the World Health Organisation, which is also backing the project, said: "It is urgent that this approach, along with preventive action, be added to the list of cost-effective interventions being used to improve nutrition and reduce mortality."

Also the fact that peanut butter has the color and consistency of ####### helps it be indistinguishable from actual #######.

If it contains salmonella then it would probably cure hunger... forever

When you say, is this a good thing? Are you referring to the idea that trying to prevent death from malnutrition is/isn't a good thing or simply using this peanut based solution is/isn't a good thing? I can't see how a solution that works can be a bad thing, unless you don't want to solve the problem

My neice and I debated over the the pros and cons. I played as devils advocate arguing the fact that if you have a country that has a high mortality rate because of hunger and you feed them. the survival rate will go up and you will need more food.
