K3 and SSN

Just wondering since K3 is a multiple entry visa is it possible to put off AOS for a 2 year time period that the K3 is issued and still apply for an SSN, and if so how does one go about that after being issued a K3 visa? Or do we have to file for AOS so that we can apply for the SSN.

In my recent studies on the SSA site. You must be able to work or prove you need the SS card for another reason (like bringing a statement from an entity showing they wont do____ without a SS #), in order to get said card.

So, you can apply for EAD seperately from the AOS, and once that is received, then apply for a social.

Someone will come along with more info :)

If I have misunderstood the SS reg's PLEASE someone correct me that has been through it already.

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

We did exactly that, applied for EAD and the SS Card and then waited to file AOS so that it would be approved after our two-year wedding anniversary. At that time, however the fees were separate but much lower regardless of whether you filed together or separately. The same procedure is still available but will result in paying the separate EAD fee of (Is it $340 now?). Yes, the K3 holder must have EAD to get an SSN.

I find this as overall a good plan. There's no delay in the authorization to work and the fee to remove conditions (no longer a factor in this scenario) is more than the fee for EAD. Or main reasoning was that in the time frame we would have dealt with removal of conditions, we were planning to be spending quite a bit of time abroad and didn't want to be tied to the USA for another immigration procedure.

In this case though, the OP, the dip sticks, has already been married over two years.

There's no reason for them not to adjust status immediately upon his arrival to the US. There will be no conditions upon his residency when his adjustment is granted.

Does that mean that we can file AOS upon my hubby entering the US and he will still be able to travel outside the US right away with the multiple entry visa? Or is he not allowed to travel outside the US when we start the AOS?

He can travel using the K3 visa before or during the AOS process. Once the LPR status is approved, the K3 visa becomes invalid for all purposes.

aka Green Card.

Applying for AOS does not cancel out your K3 in any way shape or form. It is still valid until the expiration date on the I-94. Apply for AOS and EAD as soon as you possibly can after you get to the US, that way you can get your EAD quicker and then SSN and everything that comes with it, like driver's license, bank accounts, insurance etc etc etc...

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!
