High school students killed as gangs brawled over stolen iPod (illegal immigrant?)

Forcing all the illegals out without providing a mechanism to fill the vacuum would be disastrous for our economy, but certainly we can't continue on the course we are headed. What people need to understand is that the immigration problem is complex, and it requires complex thinking to fix. Otherwise we are cutting off our nose to spite our face.

The only solution is amnesty. Anything else will be economically disruptive.

Possibly. I'm not sure how I feel about it at this point, although I tend to lean towards it because you're right, the economics make sense. But I see this as a stop-gap in any case. I think if we really want to fix the problem, we'll help Central and South America to develop their economies such that their citizens won't feel that it's necessary to risk their life to cross into the US.

Must be waitin for a breeze. Lickin the finger doesnt always work.

Make up your mind. You either get cheap produce and illegal immigrants, or your food costs 3-5 times as much with American workers in the fields. It's really that simple, because there's no "guest worker" program right now that would be anywhere near cost effective.

extolling the financial benefit of illegally hiring illegal workers seems like a pretty strange stance to take.

I'm not extolling, I'm explaining the reality of the situation. You can't just round up all the illegals without causing severe economic upheaval. The situation is not one of black and white, and it doesn't have simple answers. In fact, it doesn't have an answer at all right now because nobody in this country is willing to have the actual debate that will fix the problem. It's just rhetoric on both sides right now.

Listing the fact that it would be bad for the economy is moot; any benefit illegals give is in the way of practically slave labor. Should we have used that same argument back in the day of slaves? 'Can you imagine what it would cost to hire someone to pick those fields?'

Or 'no one else will do it'.....erm, that's because it's exploiting their status for financial benefit. No one else will do it...that's an argument that is hard to prove...as one poster already mentioned teens getting ####### jobs for the summer. But at the end of the day, the logical end to that sentence 'no one else will do it' is 'because it's unfair and exploitative'.

I don't get the pro-illegal stance in this regard. It seems so anti-human rights. I am anti-illegal, that has been clear from dot. But I don't want to benefit on exploting someone either. It's not right. And if my lettuce shoots up to whatever it is, then so be it.

'Fixing the problem' would not help your argument, because the second illegals become legal, they will cease to be useful because there's nothing to hold over them to exploit them as they are being exploited now. If taxes are paid, and they have rights, they are useless to these employers.

HB, you're completely not listening to what I'm saying. I didn't say that we need illegal immigration. I am saying that the illegal immigration is complex, and you can't just kick these millions of people out of the country without consequences, amny of which are economic. I said there needs to be a real fix, not just rhetoric. Nowhere did I take a stand that illegal immigration is good for the country.

Sounds like a back peddle from your original statement I quoted. *shrug*

Fine, send 'em all home and let's let American citizens have at those jobs of picking lettuce and strawberries and all the other produce from California that finds its way to your grocery table. Are you prepared to pay 5 times what you're paying now for your food to support the wage that an American will work for? Do you want to pay $8/gallon for milk, and $5.00 for a head of lettuce?

Illegal immigration is a problem. But the problem needs intelligent answers, not stupidity.

You can tell because their backs are moist.

Not cool, dude, not cool at all. You know there are some people on here that are married to previous illegals. I being one of them. I don't appreciate this statement at all. Could you generalize any more? Just because they came here illegally doesn't mean they have "wet" backs. Jerk!

You can tell because their backs are moist.

 ?

Marilyn, I always knew there was a reason I didn't like you. That response to that statement right there just proves to me why. The first smiley you used was appropriate. The second one, however, not so much. I honestly can't believe you even hinted at thinking that statement was funny.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!
