High school students killed as gangs brawled over stolen iPod (illegal immigrant?)

Fine, send 'em all home and let's let American citizens have at those jobs of picking lettuce and strawberries and all the other produce from California that finds its way to your grocery table. Are you prepared to pay 5 times what you're paying now for your food to support the wage that an American will work for? Do you want to pay $8/gallon for milk, and $5.00 for a head of lettuce?

Illegal immigration is a problem. But the problem needs intelligent answers, not stupidity.

Yeah, let's benefit from that slave labor all we can!

Make up your mind. You either get cheap produce and illegal immigrants, or your food costs 3-5 times as much with American workers in the fields. It's really that simple, because there's no "guest worker" program right now that would be anywhere near cost effective.

True, true.

However, illegal immigrants are now being hired into jobs that they haven't in the past. The old "Americans wouldn't want to pick strawberries in the blazing sun" argument doesn't work so well anymore.

In my area, lots of the cheaper restaurants, especially pizza-type joints, have kitchens staffed almost entirely by illegals. When I was younger, that was a job for the local high school kids, slingin' pizzas. A pizza place with 5 illegals in the kitchen means 5 local high school kids without a summer job.

A bigger problem is in the construction industry, where I do a bit of side work. In the past, if there was an illegal on a construction site, he was doing the unskilled grunt work. Now they are doing the more skilled work- carpentry, drywall, flooring, you name it. The government lets it slide. If you're going to build and you put a request out for bids, you're going to get higher-end bids from contractors who hire Americans, and lower-end bids from contractors who hire illegals. Who are you going to choose? The lower bid, that's who. And for every illegal immigrant swinging a hammer, that's one skilled American worker looking for work. Illegals do more than just the sh!tty jobs that Americans don't want these days, and any politician who tries to point that out is automatically branded a "racist". It's a serious problem.

I am just wondering something, how can you tell they are illegals? are they wearing a sign or something or do you see a bunch of Mexicans working in the kitchen and automatically assume they are illegals??

and yes I know there are probbaly illegals working in places like that but you can't know for sure unless you ask them and they tell you...

Some of the local pizza slingers are drinking buddies of mine- all Mexicans and Guatemalans, all illgeals, none shy about admitting it because they know our government won't do a goddamn thing about it.

I also know contractors who hire illegals.

You bring up a good point, in a round about way. You sort of prove that this is a touchy subject, the elephant in the room that nobody can talk about without someone saying "what, are you racist or something?"

...and second of all, why would any employer jump through all the rigmarole of sponsoring someone for a work visa to perform a task for which an identical skillset can be found down the street at a reasonable price?

I wasn't trying to imply that anybody was a racist I was just curious how people know who are illegals and who aren't...

There's a degree of assumption that goes on (e.g. I'm fairly convinced that the large group of hispanics that congregate on the street on the corner of 35th and 8th are illegals waiting for day labour), though obviously there are problems with doing that.

There's obviously no way that I can prove it.

Well context defines. In a restaurant - probably not.

Generally speaking, in restaurants I only ever see the wait staff. What goes on in kitchens is behind closed doors.
